Allowing her wisdom, intelligent foresight and vision for helping shape a world built on humanity to play out in the pages of Harper’s Bazaar Arabia is a privilege. Interviewed by Louise Nichol, former Bazaar Editor-in-Chief, Louise says: “Last year, when I visited Jordan’s refugee camps and communities housing the men, women and children who have fl ed war in neighbouring Syria, I was profoundly struck by the incredible openness of Jordan to its heart-breakingly vulnerable neighbours. At a time when global rhetoric espouses the building of walls, and countries and communities appear to be turning in on themselves, concerned only with their own best interests, Jordan’s stance – the resource-poor nation has welcomed 1.3 million Syrian refugees since 2011 – offers a real beacon of optimism across the Arab world and beyond. “It has long been a personal and professional goal of mine – and even more so since that trip to the refugee camps – to speak to Jordan’s Queen Rania about her country’s sacrifi ces and the moral imperative that places the simple notion of doing the right thing above self-interest. As well as her politics, I am fascinated by Queen Rania as a wife, mother, social media force and reluctant style icon; and arguably the most revered Arab woman on the world stage. On page 110, Her Majesty generously speaks with incredible insight, intelligence and intuition to Harper’s Bazaar Arabia about how she navigates the complexities of compassion and what we can all do to live a truly meaningful life,” Louise says. WOMEN FOR WOMEN FIERCE FEMALES With International Women’s Day on March 8, here’s a nod to some of the women who have inspired me most over time. Strong, smart, successful and brilliant. To list mine in their entirety is impossible, but I will forever be thankful to Emmeline Pankhurst and American feminist Betty Friedan for being the instigators of forceful movements that helped place women front and centre for the fi rst time and redirected the course of history. I also look to Amal Clooney, Oprah Winfrey and Malala Yousafzai for their fi erceness and strength, and Maya Angelou for the wisdom in her words. Remarkable accomplishments feature heavily in this issue, with a roster of women achieving greatness. Founder of the Surviving Hijab group, Manal Rostom talks to Bazaar about her quest to climb to Everest Base Camp, partnering with Facebook to raise awareness about tolerance and equality (page 74); while seven athletes representing the UAE in the Special Olympics World Games on March 14 are proof of the power of determination in a culture that values inclusivity (page 100). But it is not only women who inspire the team at Harper’s Bazaar, and it is to the late Karl Lagerfeld we pay tribute on page 98. An artist, a creator, a dreamer and a believer, he has been at the forefront of women’s fashion for as long as I can remember, questioning not only boundaries of style, but also perceptions of who women are and what they want. While the fashion world has lost part of its soul, Karl’s legacy lives on and we look forward to witnessing the changing of the guard at Fendi and Chanel. Advocates for those who question ideologies, challenge limitations and strive for more – individually and as an all-inclusive entity – we hope these pages rouse conversation and affect change in all of us for the greater good. Together we are stronger. Spring in bloom is my favourite time of year, calling for crisp whites with bursts of brilliant sky blues and desert golds. But to us, it means understanding and coexisting.” ANN MARIE MCQUEEN Writer With a love of telling stories, Ann Marie McQueen dived passionately into our feature on this month’s Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi on page 100. Why was the Special Olympics an important story to tell? “When I moved to the UAE in 2008, I was struck by the lack of accessibility and at the absence of people of determination. However, I have seen such amazing leaps forward and it makes me so happy and proud to live here.” Hopes for the future: “Finishing my book and my screenplay, and then write another one of each!” Ultimate heroine: “Gertrude Bell – a British explorer who spurned a comfortable Victorian society life for one of adventure and diplomacy.
