PRICES APPROXIMA TE he latest creative to fall hook, line and sinker for Dubai’s temperate climes is Laura Vilppula, one half of the luxury fi ne jewellery brand, Addalit. The Finnish-born beauty moved into Dubai’s all- encompassing Bvlgari Residences last year with her three-year-old son, Otto, and husband, Ahti Vilppula. “I’ve always travelled,” the 35-year-old tells Bazaar. “I was born and raised in Finland, and have lived in Athens, Milan, LA and London – which is where we lived for 10 years – before coming here. We didn’t actually mean to move to Dubai, it just happened,” she smiles. “When I saw the Bvlgari Residence development, I just really fell in love with it,” she adds, of the exclusive island properties. “I told my husband this is where I want to live. It’s so stunning, serene and calm.” Being Bvlgari, the resort was already intoxicatingly elegant but Laura has managed to apply her eye for fi nery and femininity throughout. “When we moved in there was nothing here but the walls so I did everything myself. My style is quite Nordic and quite simple, so there’s a lot of grey, white and black accents, and then my bedroom is pink which is my favourite colour. I wanted it to be girly with the pink walls and white fl uffy accents.” There is also a smattering of pink roses and peonies from Bliss perfectly placed in each room, Laura’s favourite when they are in season. Laura’s attention to detail translates in the considerately placed keepsakes and the way she gives statement pieces the space to breathe. Each room adopts a slightly different mood but somehow retains her identifi able sense of style. One of the bedrooms boasts a wall of magazine covers – novelty papering from a Swedish company called My Perswall. “It was so cool, I just loved it,” she enthuses. “The movie poster of Audrey Hepburn in my dressing room and the painting of Marilyn Monroe in the living room refl ect my love for the cinema and they are both iconic, beautiful women.” Although the couple are both art fans, Bazaar’s eagerness to be the fi rst through their doors means they haven’t quite imported the entirety of their lives here, yet. “We have a lot of art but most of it is still in storage in London,” Laura says. “I have recently bought a piece by a local artist, though, which I love.” The piece in question is of singer Madonna and is by Dubai-based Iranian artist Shima Moghadasi. Throughout the rest of their home, Laura’s eye for contemporary design seems perfectly at ease in Bvlgari’s sophisticated shell. “Most of my furniture is from Eichholtz and I’ve picked up a lot from ID Design and 2XL here in Dubai – they have pretty things at a great price point.” T Dress, Dhs20,300, Alexander McQueen at Harvey Nichols - Dubai Earrings (below) by Addalit Jewellery, designed personally by Laura for her 2014 nuptials ➤236 HarpersBazaarArabia.com March 2019 Your LIFE WORDS: ELAINE LLOYD-JONES hours to create with the embroidery alone taking 1,000 hours. While couture and ready-to-wear might sit shoulder-to-shoulder in her burgeoning walk-in wardrobe, Laura is “an accessories person” at heart. “I’m all about jewellery and handbags,” she admits. Her penchant for pink can be found running through the assembly of bags she has lined up: a pink Ralph & Russo number, a couple of pink Hermès Kelly bags, and a quilted Chanel vanity bag are among the favourites. Laura’s affl iction for luxury expectedly transcends seamlessly into her fi ne jewellery brand Addalit, which she launched in 2012 with her good friend, Jonna Jarvenpaa. Having always loved jewellery, she says the pair just fell into the business while in London. “It somehow just came together. We only do private clients and bespoke, so everything needs to be exceptional.” It’s fi tting then, that the most precious piece of jewellery in her personal collection is a pair of emerald earrings that Laura designed for her wedding day. “The inspiration was the snowfl ake and Finnish winter, and the emeralds are Columbian. I travelled to Columbia myself to choose the stones. I think most of our brand inspiration comes from travelling and being exposed to different cultures, experiences and nature.” Laura’s favourite spot in her new home is the terrace, where she can enjoy a morning coffee while watching the ocean below. “We have two beautiful views, one to the marina and the other out to sea. One of the reasons I love Bvlgari is because it has a beach, and I fi nd the ocean very healing. So, whenever I’m having a tough day or not feeling great I go to the beach.” While she admits it’s challenging to juggle having a small child with growing a business, Laura insists it doesn’t feel like work, “I enjoy being passionate about work.” So much so, she’s also thinking of launching another business here in Dubai. “Another creative venture, not jewellery, but you’ll have to watch this space,” she teases. Laura is also acutely aware of how fl awless life can appear and is keen to share another side of her story. “I don’t want to pretend that my life is perfect,” she adds, with candour. “Something that is a very big part of my life is my son’s Cystic Fibrosis – it’s a chronic lifelong illness, so it is ever present.” She goes on to lay bare the recent statistics on life expectancy. “It’s something that’s shaped my character. No one expects their child to be sick. But Cystic Fibrosis is a rare illness, so I want to talk about it and bring awareness to it. It makes you more sensitive to how precious and fragile life is. Of course we try to enjoy every day that he’s fi ne, but we’re also very careful to avoid things that might put him at risk.” While Laura fi nds pleasure – and sometimes distraction – in sourcing jewels, and light relief in fashion, she’s careful not to be blindsided by them because her family is very much the axis on which her life revolves. “My most treasured pieces in the house are my son’s new born pictures. He was born in London, in the Lindo Wing, and was 10 days old when they were taken.” “M Y S T Y L E I S Q U I T E SI M P L E A N D N O R DIC : G R EY S , WH I T E S A N D B L A C K S – A N D P I N K , M Y F A V O UR ITE C O L O UR ” The only room which breaks the mould is her son’s. “It’s just an explosion of toys!” she laughs. “My personal style is classic but also very feminine,” Laura tells us, swearing by Theory for its modern aesthetic and easy wardrobe staples. And for something a little more special, Ralph & Russo is her go-to. “They are one of my favourite brands ever. In fact, the last thing I bought was from Ralph & Russo in The Dubai Mall. I really love Tamara Ralph the creative director, she’s defi nitely a great inspiration in my life. We met many years ago, before they were as successful as they are now, and Tamara has remained the same person – so grounded and so nice,” Laura notes. It’s no surprise, then, that the real jewel in her sartorial crown is a Ralph & Russo dress from the brand’s fi rst ever couture show, Spring/Summer 2014. “I selected it from the show for my wedding party. It’s lace, and was hand-embroidered with crystals, glass beads and sequins in the London atelier. It was love at fi rst sight.” We later fi nd out that this particular dress took a total of 1,350 couturier Dress, Dhs4,650, Dina Melwani. Shoes, Ralph and Russo. Bag, Gucci. With the desert as your backdrop, let Al Maha be your home away from home Drink in the desert views from the Presidential Suite poolCREDIT HERE rguably one of the coolest locations in the UAE, Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa sits pretty in the heart of Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. With undulating dunes whichever way you look, architecture and décor that pay tribute to the heritage of Bedouins, and tented suites that add a whole new meaning to ‘glamping’, a sense of desert adventure is high at Al Maha. The fact that Arabian Oryx and gazelles wander freely around the resort (we caught one sipping from our private pool on arrival), elevates the enchantment. While our days are spent between languishing in the Timeless Spa, trekking through the great outdoors atop a camel, and sipping sundowners in our plunge pool, the true magic of the resort comes to life at twilight. The Desert Moon Dinner is a captivating way to indulge your inner Arabian princess – a beautiful al fresco evening under the stars paying homage to the art of Bedouin food, traditions and hospitality. A lavish buffet – we prefer to call it a feast – is paired with traditional live music and a falconry show, really immersing you in the world of age-old nomadic desert living. If your desire is to escape the city and lose yourself to utter seclusion, this ticks all the right boxes. Once sun is up, it’s back to the joy of exploring – this time with a nature walk, archery and wildlife drive (bring binoculars if you have them). If you want to take things up a notch, jump on a horse and experience the desert from on high. And if you’re a green-fi ngered nature buff, the Ghaf Tree Walk around the conservation area will feed your soul. While it’s not quite an adults-only resort, there’s a no-kids-under-10 policy ensuring tranquility is the order of the day, allowing you to relax and unwind or explore and do more to your absolute heart’s content.
