Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar Resort & Spa recently opened in Oman, – IHG’s fi rst boutique lifestyle resort in the region. James Reeves, GM of the resort tells us how the new property aligns with Hotel Indigo’s philosophy of celebrating the character and culture of its surrounding neighbourhood. Every Hotel Indigo begins with a neighbourhood story that guides the guest experience and design. Opening a resort in a new region can come with diff erent challenges and consid- erations. We caught up with Reeves to fi nd out more about what it takes to open a resort in a new location. 1 Build a strong relationship with the local community We see ourselves as partners with the local community, not just visitors. It’s their home, we’re becoming a part of, and their support and insights have been so valuable in creating an authentic experience that resonates with guests and locals. From the very beginning, we’ve prioritised working with local businesses and artisans. We also off er experiences that directly benefi t the community and allow our guests to connect with Jabal Akhdar, like visiting the rose water distilleries, exploring ancient villages, and learning about the region’s rich heritage. 2 Storytelling is a powerful tool I’ve learned to never underestimate the power of story- telling. Every corner of Jabal Akhdar has a story to tell, and interlacing those narratives into the guest experience is what makes Hotel Indigo so special. We’ve created an experience that’s a true refl ection of its neighbourhood, while still off ering the world-class hospitality IHG is known for. Each of our fi ve fl oors tells a chapter in the story of Jabal Akhdar, drawing inspiration from the surrounding landscape and Omani heritage of the region – from the delicate damask roses, to the vibrant hues of pomegranates, the golden threads of saff ron, and the distinctive blues of the centuries-old indigo plant. It’s about creating a sense of place, sparking curiosity, and inviting guests to become part of the neighbourhood’s story. 3 It’s important to be adaptable Embrace the ever-changing nature of this industry and never stop learning. Flexibility and adaptability are key. Things don’t always go according to plan, especially when you’re work- ing in a remote and challenging environment.
