< Previousprinciples has enabled me to best manage my thoughts and ensure I step up and take accountability for the things that are in my control and be less critical of myself for those that are not. 6 Lead from the fl oor I have intentionally worked in almost every role in every department including stewarding, housekeeping, food and beverage, front offi ce and more. A leader should never ask their team to do something that they would not be prepared to do themselves. 7 Invest time in developing your team I take the responsibility for developing our team seri- ously. It is important to fi nd time to refl ect on performance, decisions made, issues handled etc. with your team on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis providing a platform for growth and understanding. Prioritise working on the 20 percent that delivers the 80 percent, not the other way. 2 Practice juggling Although all the responsi- bilities are important, they are like rubber balls that can bounce back if dropped, except for the ball that represents family, which is made of glass. All responsibilities are impor- tant, but being available for family and loved ones is necessary and should not be neglected. 3 Stay connected To truly understand your business and anticipate the needs of your guests, customers, and colleagues, it’s important to stay connected to the business by actively involving yourself and experiencing it at all levels. A leader must be connected to their operations and feel the pulse of their hotel, something that is not possible when stuck behind a desk. 4 Take time for yourself Now more than ever, we are connected to work both in and out of the operation through video conference calls, emails, WhatsApp messages and more at all hours of the day, but fi nding time for yourself outside of work and having some quality ‘me’ time or time with friends and family is vital and should always be a priority. 5 Have a stoic mindset Stoicism encourages people to focus on what they can control and accept what they cannot, ultimately leading to emotional resilience and inner strength.
