The house has been under family ownership since 1994 when Joseph Henriot left Veuve Clicquot to manage the estate. The company adheres to very precise rules governing the growing and winemaking process. The vineyards are comprised of 34,000 hectares of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes. Henriot believes the wines should age for as long as possible. All the wines are left to age in the maison’s cellars, 18 metres below ground in ideal temperature and humidity conditions. Chardonnay makes up at least 50 per cent of all of its wines. Despite being founded in 1798, the house is known for its forward-thinking approach, with brothers Laurent and Jean-Hervé Chiquet adopting a herbicide-free philosophy after taking over from their father in the 1980s. They also retired Jacquesson’s non-vintage Brut blend in 2000 after 150 years, and replaced it with a single vintage-based cuvée, which changes yearly.
