Part of RICS’s global professional network, the Tech Partner Programme is a collaboration platform for innovative data and technology across the globe. Working together, partners will produce thought leadership, content, and market insight for the profession. Nathan Doughty, Asite CEO, said: “We are delighted to join RICS Tech Partner Programme and to extend the umbrella of the Asite Ecosystem to include RICS. As we at Asite continue our rich history of digital innovation for the built environment into our third decade, we look forward to working ever more closely with RICS and ensuring our platforms and services are incorporating the latest global industry standards.” WATER ABB’s highly efficient electric motors and variable speed drives can help the Middle East reduce CO 2 emissions in critical water supply and cooling applications. Egypt Vision 2030, Saudi vision 2030, Kuwait Vision 2030, UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 and UAE Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals and other initiatives are addressing the impact of climate change in the region. ABB is working closely with stakeholders in these programs to capture the potential savings that will contribute to a greener and more sustainable future. The Middle East is already classified as the world’s most water-stressed region and the challenge is growing. It provides an opportunity for organisations across the built environment sector to come together and collaborate on these operating standards. Combining the complementary skill sets of professionals in the property and technology spaces allows participants to take their discussions about technology as a golden thread of information. Organisations from across the whole property lifecycle, including those who address all the different asset types, will join together to create an innovative global team that will provide digital content to help the profession understand and adopt solutions that deliver real value. The Programme also seeks to encourage the continued collaboration and mutually beneficial learning between innovators from outside the property sector and the profession itself. models predict that the Middle East will be particularly impacted by rising temperatures. This is one of the factors that will increase water shortages. “To reduce water scarcity, the region must adopt water treatment plants that recycle and reuse water and encourage agricultural efficiency. These processes rely on energy intensive pumping. That makes them a prime target for energy efficiency improvements using our water industry-specific high-efficiency motors and variable speed drives,” said Ahmed Radwan, ABB MEA Motion business lead. An example of how ABB is helping customers to save energy is the Taweelah project, Abu Dhabi, one of the world’s largest desalination plants using reverse osmosis technology. The $500m development will have the capacity to process over 900,000 m3 of seawater per day, enough to meet the demands of over 350,000 households when it becomes fully operational in 2022. Using ABB drives and motors will help the plant set new benchmarks for its size, efficiency and cost by utilizing the lowest amount of energy per cubic meter of water produced. Asite platform. Alpentherme Gastein, which has six themed “worlds” covering 36,000 square meters, and Siemens have been long-term partners working to advance technological development and improve building solutions installed at the wellness establishment. They recently completed a joint project with an investment of approximately ¤1.7m, transforming Alpentherme Gastein into a facility with higher levels of energy efficiency and climate neutrality. Among other things, the upgrades consisted of adapting the entire hydronic heating system and swimming pool ventilation, including enlarging the heating registers. Adapting the system hydronics allows a large share of the required thermal energy to be generated by means of low-temperature heat pumps. This makes it possible to use recovered thermal energy sources and reduce energy generation costs. As a result, Alpentherme has cut its annual costs by approximately ¤82,000 while reducing carbon emissions by almost 370 tonnes per year. “Environmental protection and sustainability are buzzwords that capture the spirit of the times, but they’ve been firmly anchored in our corporate philosophy for decades. As a sustainable company, we also want to be a pioneer in terms of energy efficiency. Our major goal is becoming a ‘zero-emissions spa’,” said Klaus Lemmerer, managing director of Alpentherme Gastein in Bad Hofgastein. “Alpentherme Gastein is a model in terms of energy efficiency, resource conservation and climate neutrality. As a total provider of sustainability projects and energy efficiency solutions, we are particularly proud to count Alpentherme Gastein among our long-standing customers and partners,” said Henning Sandfort, CEO of Building Products at Siemens Smart Infrastructure. The next goal is to operate Alpentherme Gastein as a “zero-emissions spa.” This means making the entire heat supply carbon-free. WHITEPAPER As nations across the Middle East and North Africa region pivot to cleaner energy systems to achieve the carbon dioxide reduction commitments and drive decarbonisation, GE unveiled a whitepaper on the role of nuclear energy in achieving a carbon-free future. The whitepaper titled, Nuclear Energy: A Critical Pillar of a Carbon- Free Future, provides an overview of the current energy landscape and the efforts for decarbonisation as well as recommendations on how to achieve these goals by drawing on nuclear power as a dependable option. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), nuclear energy accounts for 10% of the world’s total global power generation and 25% of all carbon-free power generation. Leading this are the United States, France, China, Russia, and South Korea. Over the past 50 years nuclear power has avoided CO2 emissions by over 60 gigatons globally – nearly two years’ worth of global energy-related emissions. In the MENA region, the first phase of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the UAE has generated over 2,100 GWh of cleaner electricity, and cut emissions of over 950,000 kilotons of CO2. Saudi Arabia plans to build two large nuclear power plants (NPPs) with the goal of achieving 17GWe of nuclear capacity by 2040 that will meet 15 percent of the Kingdom’s needs. With the whitepaper, GE highlights the need for addressing highly-emission intensive power systems through low- carbon and emissions-free energy sources, such as nuclear power generation, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The whitepaper also underlines the commitment of GE to fund research, development, and demonstration projects.
