Farnek launched a sustainable built initiative by building a 240m2 vertical rooftop farm in its new staff accommo- dation in Jebel Ali. Farnek’s rooftop vertical garden is an example of Urban Farming where a built environment is utilised to provide access to healthy, affordable & fresh produce to employees. In a city like Dubai where landscaping space is a constraint and fresh natural organic food is not easily affordable to all, the vertical garden allows food crops to be grown on a very limited space while enjoying the benefits of easier maintenance, healthier plants, effortless harvesting, and higher yields. The garden is producing over 3,000 leafy greens such as lettuce, coriander, kale & spinach, as well as tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, capsicums & chillis which will be served directly to the staff as fresh salads enriching their nutritional requirements through fresh organic produce. Nadia Ibrahim, head of consultancy, Farnek, said: “It’s great to win this award. This is one of the innovation that Farnek has brought about to promote urban cities. We live in an ecosystem and we need to find out innovative and sus- tainable ways like how to make our cities greener. So through this [Vertical Farms] project, we are demonstrating how we can make our cities green, provide healthy fresh food for our staff, as well as be an exemplary example of susustain- ability in an FM field, which is great. I would like to thank my management and my whole team because this is not my project but it Farnek’s project. Everyone from the CEO to the staff are all excited about the project.” Highly Commended in this category went to Enova & Majid Al Futtaim Hotels for LEED accreditation of hotel portfolio across the Middle East and ENGIE Solutions for Project Istedama initiative. The firm was awarded for its ability to provide clients with property manage- ment services to international standards in residential, commercial and retail sectors. Mike Moore, CEO, Cushman & Wakefield, Saudi Arabia, said: “To win this title means so much; it’s great to be commended by clients and business de- velopment, but to be recognised by your peers in the industry as the best in your category is fantastic. I’m very proud.” Furthermore, he said: “I think what was unique about our submission is it is a hybrid solution. There are a lot of great property management companies out there, but what we offer is slightly different, because we are a FM service provider as well as a property manager. And so, we were able to offer a turnkey approach, which is slightly different in the market.” While still in celebratory spirits, Moore maintained a forward-looking approach, saying that the priorities for the coming year are aimed at “survival” and “growth”. The Highly Commended in this category went to Emaar Community Management (ECM). As per its nomina- tion submission, ECM registered a CSAT score of 4.5 out of 5 among residents moving into its communities. Much to the satisfaction of the firm’s residents, the Community Service Fee saw a drop, as low as 17% in most communities in 2020 with various energy saving initia- tives, predictive and energy centered maintenance, digitisation community functions, going 100% paperless initia- tives, and disruptive technology in operations and management. The year 2020 was an unprecedent- ed year for all businesses; however, for cleaning companies it was the op- portunity to showcase their abilities and reinforce their value with regards to facing a world-wide pandemic never previously seen in our lifetime. Idama rose to the challenge and ever- changing demands to meet and deliver a clean safe environment and client satisfaction. As multiple clients started to reduce manpower (short term as it turned out), Idama took the decision to retain all of its key assets such as its staff. Talking about the submission, Andrea Yoko, head of soft services at Ejadah, said: “I believe that the submission actually focused on the main aspects of cleaning. Obviously, with the pandemic, the importance is not actually on cleaning, it’s actually cleaning for health. So I think that played quite a large part.” Yoko revealed that the awards means a lot as Idama is fairly new, with being active the last two and a half years. She said: “It’s a great rec- ognition for the team who have gone above and beyond.” Yoko in the past has played an instrumental role in the successful service delivery for a number of iconic projects in the UAE and Europe for over than 38 years. 2019 was an exceptional year of growth and 2020 despite a pandemic continued in the same manner for Idama. Planning, correct practices, sustainable measures and a strong operational flexibility and resilience resulted in a bounty of varied new con- tracts awards for the firm. The growth in revenue across total FM contracts was 23% when compared to 2019. The dedicated full-time self-delivery team headcount also increased by 23.44% The highly commended in this category went to two firms. One was picked up by MBM which is a 43-year- old company serving diverse clientele across UAE. The other highly com- mended winner was Farnek Services. Building on its stellar track record in sanitation and waste manage- ment, Imdaad made significant contri- butions to the UAE’s fight against the pandemic. Imdaad’s Environmental Solutions division introduced a host of cleaning and disinfection solutions and ensured timely and safe collection and disposal of wastes, especially medical wastes. Leveraging more than 33 years of ex- perience and market-leading capabilities, the Environmental Solutions division addressed various waste management needs in the UAE. Its efficient mecha- nism for collecting and transporting medical waste from healthcare facilities and to Dubai Municipality’s incineration facility created an important contribu- tion to the country’s pandemic efforts. The Environmental Solutions’ dedi- cated teams and special purpose vehicles handle over 500 tons of medical waste each year, which is equivalent to around a quarter of the total biomedical waste generated in Dubai. Further, Imdaad’s Material Recovery Facility, Farz, handled a significant amount of medical waste during the pandemic. Working 24x7, Farz can divert 1,200 tons of waste from landfills daily. Talking about the operations during the pandemic, Ashly Alex, director of Environmental Services at Imdaad, said: “It was quite challenging time. We were able to cope up with the situation. We were able to manage the business conti- nuity, considering the type of business we are into. We managed to keep our clients happy during this difficult period. We kept our staff healthy and safe dur- ing this time. And waste management was one of the biggest challenge, espe- cially we were managing the infected wastes as well. We were able to do it in the right professional way and the best practice were implemented. So I believe it all helped us to win this award.” In this category too there are two highly commended winners in this category. One of the Highly Commended was Dulsco. One of the judges stated: “This year, Dulsco successfully implemented its paper pulp moulding facility, the first of its kind in the region.” The other highly commended was Bee’ah. Despite Covid-19, Bee’ah contin- ued its vital operations and during 2020 it successfully launched the Biomass Fa- cility, Alternative Raw Material (ARM) Facility and Sharjah Waste to Energy facility, which is close to completion. Transguard Group expanded its sizeable reach with the signing of some significant contracts across a num- ber of sectors. For example, Transguard Security Services is the sole security provider for ENBD, as well as for Emaar, the nation’s largest property developer. Transguard has long provided security for the developer’s Hospitality and Enter- tainment portfolios, but in the summer of 2020 the contract expanded to include all of Emaar’s residential communities. This year also saw Transguard secure the residential community of a major sustainable developer in Abu Dhabi, as well as take on the majority of the security requirements of Expo. Transguard has long been the secu- rity provider for the embassies of the United Kingdom (both in Dubai and Abu Dhabi), Germany and Canada, and this year added the Irish and Maltese embassies to our diplomatic portfolio. Tim Mundell, chief security officer – group security service, Transguard Group, said: “It’s been an immensely challenging year for everybody in the FM and security industries; so I think it’s our ability to adapt to the chal- lenges by focusing on innovation and safety is what helped us win this year. One of our greatest strengths has been deployment of our staff while main- taining the highest safety standards to look after people in the UAE. While Transguard is a well-known brand, we don’t take that for granted. This award means a huge amount to us, and we’ve had the privilege to win this four times in the last five years, which makes me immensely proud of my team and the entire Tranguard staff. “We’re now mobilising staff for the Dubai Expo 2020. We’ve also got some exciting developments in close protec- tion and executive protection. The future is exciting, but we face a chal- lenging environment.” Mark Hayden Doughty, senior man- ager – security services, Transguard Group, added: “The entire Transguard team, especially the over ten and half thousand security staff working across the UAE, is indebted to this award.” The highly commended winner was Arkan, the security division of Ejadah. Cushman & Wakefield navigated the past year’s challenges despite the uncertainty, and achieved significant profit within reduced sales. The firm recorded 13% increase in profit mar- gins and 18% increase in gross margins in 2020, mainly due to its success in delivering consultancy solutions to a wide range of clients across the GCC, including UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman aside from its home market – Saudi Arabia. Lifting the second trophy for the evening, Mike Moore, CEO, Cushman & Wakefield, said: “Well, this is the one we really wanted. We have been very lucky over the past few years; we’ve won it five or six times, with Highly Commended once or twice. This is what we believe we do best.” Moore attributed the win to Cush- man & Wakefield’s “real subject matter experts” and the company’s under- standing and reflection of the Saudi Arabia market and culture. Maintaining a realistic approach about the way forward for the company in terms of delivery of FM consultancy services, he added: “When you’ve won, it’s easy to think you’re the best. And, today, we are. But, it’s important to nev- er assume you’re going to win it again or that you’re the best. You always have to look to improve. It’s chasing that ex- cellence that - perhaps - keeps us ahead of the team.” One of the judges said about the win- ner of this category: “With 100+ years in business, 53,000 team members, $8.8b 2019 revenue, operating in 60 countries, there is no room for worthy competition!” The Highly Commended in this cat- egory went to Adeeb Group. This was a newly introduced category this year. The Sup- plier of the Year award recognises any Middle East-based supplier involved in the FM supply chain that includes and is not limited to CAFM providers, plumb- ing and sanitaryware, security systems, firefighting and alarm systems, IAQ (indoor air quality) specialists, cleaning suppliers, and others. Verteco launched an innovative product which measurably reduces water usage, while delivering a wide range of other benefits to customers. It boosts user experience and offers cost savings through a reduced need for maintenance, and crucially, can be retrofit. Multiple clients approached Verteco with sustainability targets to achieve, with water-saving a key area for improvement. A staggering 42% of water consump- tion in many commercial buildings is flushed through urinals. With limited water-saving solutions available to overcome common urinal problems, without increased cost and main- tenance requirements, Verteco has helped their clients meet targets. Verteco’s Waterless Urinal simply reduces water flushing from current levels to ZERO, so there are environ- mental savings achieved from day 1. Based on proven commercial, environ- mental and operational savings, water- less urinals don’t cost organisations anything. In fact, when implemented and maintained correctly, they are a net contributor in every way. David King, managing director at Verteco, said: “We have been doing wa- ter sustainability in the region for the past 12 years, and I would like to think that we were like a major contributor to the region when it comes to saving a lot of water. “The awards are absolutely amazing for the people that have been with us for the past 12 years. It was 12 years ago when we started. It was a major challenge. Everyone was talking about sustainability, water conservation, but nobody was ever doing anything about it. Now the tide has changed. Saving water now is in everybody’s DNA.” The highly commended winner was AABTools Industrial Supplies, a dedicated professional tools provider established in UAE since 1960.
