Some passengers feel discomfort during take-off and descent as the air in their middle ear and sinuses expands and contracts. Chewing, swallowing, and yawning can help. Babies might suff er more acutely. Another side eff ect of the cabin’s atmosphere is the low humidity, leading to dry eyes, a sore throat, and thirst. Travellers should drink regularly but avoid alcohol and caff eine, both of which cause dehydration. Regularly applying moisturiser to the skin and lips will also help. It’s a great idea to wear glasses, too, rather than contact lenses, on long-haul fl ights. You should also aim to wear loose clothing and leave the area under the seat in front of you empty to allow space to stretch. Infection prevention Handwashing is the single most important infection control measure. Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after touching potentially contaminated surfaces. As an alternative, you can use alcohol-based hand rub available in the sanitary kit in your seat pocket. Wiping surfaces with an alcohol wipe, if available, is also a good practice. If you feel unwell on the plane, inform the cabin crew immediately in order for them to provide you with the best possible medical care. For added measure, face masks should be considered to avoid spreading and contracting any illness caused by respiratory germs. One of the other ways to avoid getting sick on a plane is to always stay hydrated. Staying hydrated can also help our immune system stay protected against germs. Jet lag Jet lag’s eff ects vary depending on how many time zones are crossed, the individual’s ability to recover, and the direction of travel. To diminish the eff ects, rest well before fl ying and, if your schedule permits, move two hours towards the destination time before fl ight. In the air, eat lightly, reset your watch, and consume caff eine sparingly. Schedule outdoor activities For safe disposal of needles and syringes, please approach one of our cabin crew Sit up straight Place the pillow at the hollow of your back. Sit tall in your seat to avoid compressing your spine. Do not cross your legs. Instead, try to sit with your weight evenly distributed. Exercise techniques Simple exercises to help relieve tiredness Shoulder circles Sit tall and move forward in your seat. Bring your shoulders up towards your ears, then circle back downwards. Reverse the exercise by lifting shoulders towards your ears and drop them back. Ankle circles Sit tall in your seat and place the pillow under your thigh, just above the knee. Keep your weight even as you circle your ankle around, trying to keep the whole foot as still as possible. Neck rolls Sit back in your seat and fl atten the headrest. Gently roll your neck to one side, then back towards the other side. Keep the back of your neck extended. early on, limit daytime naps to 40 minutes or less, and go to bed at an appropriate hour for the new zone. Health Consult your doctor about any health concerns you have before fl ying. Pregnant women and those with heart or respiratory problems, blood diseases, or ear, nose and sinus infections should seek medical advice before fl ying. Travellers who scuba dive should wait 24 hours after their last dive before fl ying to minimise the risk of decompression illnesses. Although rare, deep vein thrombosis can also pose a threat. Passengers are encouraged to walk around periodically to decrease any potential risk.
