< Previous40 | ATLAS BY ETIHAD | August 2024 Born in New York City just four months after her mother and grandmother had arrived by boat after fl eeing persecution, Liliane Lijn’s life was always set for the extraordinary. The celebrated pioneer who is credited as being the fi rst woman artist to work with kinetic text, exploring both light and text as early as 1962, is also likely the fi rst woman artist to exhibit work incorporating an electric motor. Currently on show, Lijn’s “Arise Alive” at Haus der Kunst in Munich is a landmark exhibition, off ering the fi rst large-scale solo museum show dedicated to the artist’s six-decade career. The comprehensive collection showcases her artistic vision, characterised by a unique ability to bridge the human and the technological with elegance while evoking emotion. “My work is an exercise in seeing the world …I want to feel alive in my work,” Making the invisible visible is at the heart of this celebratory exhibition By Thembalethu Zulu says Lijn of her approach. “I want it to breathe. I want its surface to be as skin, translucent, porous, emitting the fi ne moist heat of the living,” she adds. A common theme throughout her practice is the visualisation of the invisible, a key factor in her works, infl uenced by her interest in energy and defi ning kinetic art. Over the course of her career, the artist conducted research into the concept of invisibility by exploring how electronic waves, forces, vibrations, light and sound could be visualised. This research fuelled her lifelong dedication to understanding the nature of energy. Arise Alive traces Lijn’s artistic journey from her early experiments with kinetic art to her focus on light, with a central focus being her Female Figures and Cosmic Dramas series, a collection of sculptures from the 1980s that present futuristic, IMA GE S: MAXIMILIAN GEUTER; MANUELA ILLERA; STEPHEN WEISS; C OUR TE SY OF THE AR TIST AND RODE O L ONDON/PIRAEUS EtA_10Aug2024_EN_40-41_Spotlight_13325259.indd 4018/07/2024 10:35spotlight August 2024 | ATLAS BY ETIHAD | 41 Clockwise from far left: Conjunction of Opposites: Woman of War and Lady of the Wild Things, 1986; Portrait of Liliane Lijn; Liquid Refl ections, 1966-1968; Get Rid of Government Time, 1962 female archetypes. These innovative works, constructed from soft materials and industrial elements, blur the lines between machine and human form, refl ecting Lijn’s ongoing exploration of a new, feminine expression. The exhibition features a variety of media, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, fi lms and installations. Visitors can enjoy a deeper understanding of the artist’s process through an audio tour narrated by Lijn, giving insights into her working methods and the creative forces that drive her. Over the years, her work has drawn inspiration from a number of sources, including Surrealist ideas, ancient mythologies as well as contemporary feminist and scientifi c thought. The Haus der Kunst presents a particularly signifi cant context for Arise Alive. Opened in 1937, the museum served as a cultural fl agship for National Socialism. This exhibition, showcasing the work of a Jewish-born artist who fl ed Europe on the last boat from Antwerp to New York in 1939, adds a powerful layer of meaning to Lijn’s continued exploration of themes such as transformation and resilience. Arise Alive is on show until 22 September. hausderkunst.de ETIHAD AIRWAYS OFFERS 10 FLIGHTS PER WEEK TO MUNICH ETIHAD.COM EtA_10Aug2024_EN_40-41_Spotlight_13325259.indd 4118/07/2024 10:3542 | ATLAS BY ETIHAD | August 2024 Words Mo Laudi (Ntshepe Tsekere Bopape) Mornings Only in France would you fi nd a queue wrapping around the block for a boulangerie. His dynamic career blends various creative disciplines, refl ecting his commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding, engagement and collaboration. Having lived in Paris for almost two decades, he takes us through where to eat when in the City of Lights. Once upon a time, some friends of mine, with a hint of irony and a dash of genuine admiration, would call me the King of Paris nightlife. The moniker wasn’t entirely unwarranted. In those days, I was a nocturnal maestro, commanding the DJ decks with the fervour of a man possessed. These days, my DJing takes me more often to international locales. When I’m back in Paris, my haunts are now art galleries, museums and restaurants rather than clubs. The frenetic energy of the DJ booth has given way to the more subtle, yet equally intoxicating, rhythms of Parisian art and dining.
