< Previous50 edge_ july 2023 opinion The changing face of cybersecurity in the Middle East C ybersecurity continues to play an important role in the Middle East, especially with an increased demand for technologies that secure remote work and hybrid environments, adoption of IoT and cloud migration. According to Gartner, end-user spending on security and risk management in the MENA region is forecasted to total $2.8 billion in 2023, with cloud security spending projected to grow the highest. The UAE’s Ministry of Economy has forecasted that enterprises are predicted to spend $12.6 billion on cloud security tools. There is a growing emphasis on cloud security, especially with the increasing adoption of cloud computing in the Middle East. While organisations are implementing robust security measures, encryption, and access controls, there is a need for cloud-based security services to be able to scale across an infrastructure that is dispersed and localised. Attacks are increasing in sophistication, and hackers are using more automated toolchains, which means a rapidly evolving threat landscape. When it comes to ransomware, threat actors By Haider Pasha Chief Security Officer, Palo Alto Networks, EMEA and LATAM With evolving trends and the rise of cyber threats, cloud security, advanced attack tactics, and proactive cybersecurity measures are now more crucial than ever SECURITY A major pain point Ransomware harassment is typically carried out via phone calls and emails to C-level individualsedge_ july 2023 51 opinion are increasingly employing extortion techniques to gain leverage over targeted organisations in order to accomplish their goals in the region. The Middle East region has a strong mandate towards implementing IoT, creating smart cities and encouraging digital infrastructure, especially as per the recently a nnounced We The UAE 2031 vision. Cyber-attacks are rising in today’s digital age, and it is essential to look at new ways to protect the sophisticated and advanced attacks. As per Palo Alto Network’s threat intelligence team, Unit 42, 2023 will be the year we see a large cloud ransomware compromise, with multi-extortion tactics continuing to rise. There is no doubt that the investment in cyber defence by the Middle Eastern government authorities, such as UAE’s National Cybersecurity Strategy, are helping build a more robust cybersecurity ecosystem. These regulatory frameworks help to protect critical sectors, encourage best practices, and enforce compliance. Organisations, especially for ransomware, need to evolve defences to address the various methods threat actors use. Incident response plans today need to involve not only technical considerations but also safeguards for an organisation’s reputation and considerations for how to protect employees or customers who may become targets for some of extortionists’ more aggressive tactics. In 2023, we will witness more threat actors using stealthy software and techniques to steal data without victims being aware. A good way to target this is to upskill and up-tool your attack surface management and detection capabilities to support critical digital assets. While in many cases the motivation is financial, Unit 42 also sees indications that extortion can happen in service of a group’s larger goals – sometimes simply to fund other activities, but other times to distract from them. In addition, harassment is another extortion tactic targeting specific individuals, often the C-suite with threats and unwanted communications. Only 29 percent of UAE companies offer cybersecurity training and education to CEOs and the rest of their C-suite to develop a better understanding, while 50 percent offer optional training, and 21 percent offer no training at all, per research commissioned by Palo Alto Networks in 2023. Public awareness and education about cybersecurity risks is vital. Many Middle Eastern government initiatives and educational institutions are launching awareness programs, and it is imperative that businesses also invest in these initiatives. The Palo Alto Networks’ study, which surveyed 500 CEOs in the UAE, found that while 86 percent of the respondents claim to have a good understanding of cybersecurity, 41 percent said they had not done a full assessment of their potential financial loss in the event of a successful cyberattack. With digital transformation bringing a sea- change in the way companies operate, it is also vital that CEOs, CISOs and CIOs work more closely than ever to evaluate risks and take steps to ensure that they have the very best cybersecurity platforms to help them stay ahead of threats and minimise risk. The Middle East cybersecurity landscape is dynamic, and new trends and developments continue to emerge. It is essential that organisations and individuals stay up to date on the evolving threat landscape and proactively adopt security measures. 29% The fraction of UAE companies that offer cybersecurity training and education to C-suite Aggressive tactics Ransomware groups are layering extortion techniques to put more pressure on organisations “In 2023, we will witness more threat actors using stealthy software and techniques to steal data without victims being aware”52 edge_ july 2023 gadgeteatch APPLE: Vision Pro In its first significant hardware release in over a decade, Apple has launched the much-awaited Apple Vision Pro augmented reality headset. It has the power to evoke a plethora of emotions, from exhilaration and joy to frustration and determination (I’ve witnessed it multiple times, leaving me in awe). This emotional investment is one of the major reasons for the success of the industry and the MENA gaming market in itself is projected to reach $6 billion in the next four years. With an industry with such a high cash flow, some expect it to be male-dominated and have a huge gender gap. Surprisingly enough, I witnessed gaming as one of the very few industries where the gender gap is the lowest as compared to the cash flow. According to studies, 45 percent of all gamers worldwide are women and the gaming market has a current valuation of $197.11 billion. Female gamers in MENA alone are poised to drive the industry beyond $5 billion by 2025. These numbers clearly indicate that women are carving their space in an industry traditionally dominated by men. Women’s presence not only diversifies the player base but also influences game development and design. This shift is vital as it brings new perspectives, experiences, and narratives to the forefront, allowing for more inclusive and immersive gaming experiences for all. Being a casual gamer, I myself have noticed minor (or major) changes. Say, for example, it is no news that female characters in most of the games are often objectified. But, we are seeing a change in this approach. The evolution of Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) showcases a remarkable transformation in the portrayal of female characters in games. From an objectified figure, she has emerged as a strong, independent protagonist with depth and agency. Her journey symbolises the industry’s shift towards more authentic and empowering representations of women, inspiring positive change. While strides have been taken to break free from tired tropes and stereotypes, there is an ongoing need for nuanced portrayals that showcase strength, resilience, and agency. By championing well-crafted female characters, game developers can empower women to see themselves as the heroes of their own stories. Gaming is more than a mere pastime — it’s a community, a support system, and a personal journey. The bonds forged within this digital realm extend beyond the screen, transcending cultural and geographical boundaries.
