In a recent roundtable discussion co-organised by Taqeef and Midea Building Tech and moderated by Almas Tholot, Editor of MEP Middle East, and Julianne Tolentino, Associate Editor of Construction Week Middle East, experts gathered to explore the industry’s critical role in the nation’s decarbonisation eff orts. The panel included key voices such as Imran Sheikh, MEP Director at Ramboll; Mohamed Amer, Regional Director Operations at the International Code Council; Nabil Shahin, Managing Director at AHRI; Srinivasan Rangan, Senior Director of Engineering at Taqeef; Michel Abi Saab, General Manager at Emerge Limited (formerly Masdar); Rahul Radhakrishnan, Sustainability Manager at Al Wasl; Jamila El Mir, Senior Advisor to the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions; and Amr Galal, Senior Regional Sales Manager - Electrical Products at Siemens, VP at ASHRAE. These industry leaders shared valuable insights into how the HVAC sector is tackling the challenges of decarbonisation, from retrofi tting existing buildings to driving innovation. The conversation revealed that the path to a greener future is both complex and exciting. THE KEY TO LONG-TERM SAVINGS One of the most pressing challenges discussed was how to decarbonise existing buildings. “It’s not enough to only focus on new builds; we need to look at the buildings already in place,” said Rangan. Retrofi tting HVAC systems with energy-effi cient technologies and environmentally friendly refrigerants emerged as a crucial solution. However, as Sheikh pointed out, “While these upgrades come with an upfront cost, the long-term savings and environmental benefi ts are undeniable.” The UAE’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint has placed a spotlight on the HVAC sector. “We’re talking about transitioning to refrigerants that don’t harm the environment, improving system effi ciencies, and most importantly, reducing energy consumption,” explained Abi Saab. TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION AND BUILDING CODES Another major point of discussion was the role of technician certifi cation and building codes. “Without properly trained technicians, we won’t be able to maintain these advanced systems,” said Galal. The panel stressed the need for scaled-up technician certifi cation programmes, which would ensure that the workforce is equipped to manage and maintain energy-effi cient HVAC systems eff ectively. Moreover, the conversation turned to the need for updated building codes that refl ect the latest in energy-effi cient HVAC technologies. “We need building codes that push the envelope in terms of sustainability,” said Amer, adding that international best practices could help the UAE align its standards with global expectations. “By ensuring that our codes evolve with the times, we’re setting up the next generation of buildings for success,” he concluded.
