< Previous| CITY FOCUS | 10 JULY 2024 The car park, with a capacity of 10,017 spaces, has obtained a Guinness World Record Msheireb Downtown Doha, Qatar’s pioneering sustainable and smart city district, has clinched the Guinness World Records title for the ‘Largest Underground Car Park’ with a capacity of 10,017 spaces. Msheireb Downtown Doha was designed for the human scale, which starts from the ground up. Locating car parking and building services underground has allowed the district to keep streets traffi c-lite, enabling narrow, pedestrian- friendly walkways. This design improves connectivity across the wider city area, with underground basements extending over the entire district. Furthermore, the downtown’s underground parking system ensures ample space for residents, tenants, and visitors, guiding drivers to available spaces and thus making the parking experience seamless and hassle- free. The underground parking system also had a signifi cant impact on building design by removing the need for back service entrances which improved street quality and aesthetic cohesion. As the fl agship project of Msheireb Properties, MSHEIREB DOWNTOWN DOHA LAUNCHES THE WORLD’S LARGEST UNDERGROUND CAR PARK “The Guinness World Records™ is a testament of our dedication to creating a sustainable and innovative city district that prioritises the well-being of our community. By locating car parking and building services underground, we enabled architects to design attractive buildings with active façades on all sides.” Raafat Tawfi k, Guinness World Records Offi cial Adjudicator, commented, “We are thrilled to recognise Msheireb Downtown Doha for its outstanding achievement in creating the Largest Underground Car Park. This feat showcases the district’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and enhancing the urban living experience.” the district incorporates the latest smart city technology and green features, making it a model for future urban developments worldwide. That said, the underground parking is just one of the many features that make the district a unique and attractive destination. With its pedestrian-friendly streets, diverse mix of residential, commercial, retail off erings, and cultural attractions, the district has become one of Qatar’s go-to destinations for residents and visitors alike. “We wanted to reclaim outdoor spaces for the community by removing vehicles from the streets around Msheireb,” said Msheireb Properties’ CEO, Eng Ali Al Kuwari. My day begins with an aromatic coffee in my kitchen, where I can enjoy overlooking the serene beauty of my garden. These moments allow me to gather my thoughts and set a positive tone for the day ahead. 8am: Each morning, I make a point to stop at a café near my house. It’s a ritual that allows me to enjoy my breakfast and catch up on the latest news by reading the newspaper. 10am: My day starts with an everyday meeting with my assistants. Together, we review and organise the day’s agenda to ensure all priorities are aligned and deadlines are met. Following this, I move on to meetings with the board to discuss strategic directions and any high-level decisions that need attention. Subsequently, I meet with various design teams to collaborate on upcoming projects, ensuring each team is supported, and any challenges are addressed. 12pm: At noon, the atmosphere in the studio becomes more relaxed as we gather for lunch. Fortunately, we have a chef who prepares meals for us, turning our lunchtime into a relaxing experience. I find this is the perfect time to brainstorm and discuss ongoing projects in a more informal setting. This relaxed environment fosters creativity and open dialogue, allowing us to exchange ideas and refine our strategies. 2pm: Most of my afternoons are dedicated to engaging with our global clientele. This often involves organising conference calls and video meetings with clients and partners from various time zones. We ensure seamless communication to discuss ongoing projects, future collaborations, and strategic planning. Additionally, we take pride in hosting visitors at our studio, including local Italian companies and suppliers, allowing for deeper connection and more robust collaboration. 4pm: I typically wrap up my day with a final cup of coffee accompanied by my assistants. Together, we plan the agenda for the following day, ensuring all tasks and meetings are accounted for. We also remain flexible and prepared for any unexpected events that might arise. 6pm: Now that the spring season is here, we often find ourselves in the garden at the end of the day. It’s a perfect setting for unwinding with a chat, a relaxing yoga session, or enjoying a refreshing drink. We work hard throughout the day, but it’s essential to balance that with moments of fun and relaxation.
