< Previous| CITY FOCUS | 10 APRIL 2024 The mosque, Masdar City’s second, is set to be completed by 2025 M asdar City, a pioneering sustainability and innovation hub in Abu Dhabi, embarked on a groundbreaking endeavour on 4 March: the construction of the region’s inaugural net-zero energy mosque. This innovative project aims to generate as much energy as it consumes annually. “Of all of the net-zero energy projects underway at Masdar City, this one has particular signifi cance for us given its focus on the community,” said Ahmed Baghoum, the CEO of Masdar City. “It will be a gathering place, a community hub, and a place of prayer, but it will also tell a powerful story about our commitment to caring for the earth. We hope it will help set a new standard for houses of worship in the region and beyond.” “We are proud of this project as a unique opportunity representing our vital role in orchestrating the construction process from the ground up, in collaboration with Masdar City, ensuring the UAE’s fi rst net-zero mosque advances Abu Dhabi’s infrastructure and MASDAR CITY BREAKS GROUND ON REGION’S FIRST NET-ZERO MOSQUE Aligned with Masdar City’s sustainable ethos, the project will divert at least 70% of construction waste from landfi lls and prioritise the use of local and recycled materials. Water-effi cient fi xtures and recycled water for irrigation will reduce water consumption by 55%. The mosque’s design targets prestigious green certifi cations, including a Zero-Energy rating from the International Living Future Institute, LEED Platinum, Estidama 4-Pearl, and a WELL Gold rating, ensuring both environmental sustainability and occupant well-being. Masdar City also recently completed the country’s fi rst net-zero energy commercial building and has two additional net-zero energy commercial and residential buildings under construction: Masdar City Square’s HQ building, which will be complete later this year, and The Link’s Co-Lab building, a unique net- zero energy shared working and living space, will be complete in 2025. community objectives,” said Abdulaziz Huwail, the Director of Construction Management Services at Mubadala Investment Company. The 2,349 square-metre mosque will be Masdar City’s second mosque and accommodate 1,300 people for daily prayers, including Friday prayers. It is designed to use 35% less energy than international baselines due to Masdar City’s focus on passive design, an architectural approach that responds to environmental conditions rather than relying solely on technology. The mosque will produce at least 100% of its remaining annual energy needs using 1,590m2 of on-site PV panels. The mosque will be constructed from rammed earth as a tribute to the very fi rst mosques in this region, but also because rammed earth is a high-quality insulator that will help keep the building cool. A tiered window system on the roof will illuminate the space while also creating cross-breezes that will make air conditioning optional in the summer months.12 APRIL 2024 | A DAY IN THE LIFE | A DAY IN THE LIFE OF MARK PHOENIX CEO, SANKARI PROPERTIES 6am: I am a big believer in truly nurturing oneself from the inside out and have committed myself to an active start every day. My mornings begin at 4:30am, dedicating the first 90 minutes to cardio exercises. Cycling is my activity of choice, followed by a cold plunge at 5 degrees Celsius for five to 10 minutes. This regimen builds physical resilience and sharpens my mental focus, setting a solid foundation for the day ahead. 8am: I find my peak productivity and mental clarity during the morning hours at work. It’s a time I look forward to for chats and coffee catchups with my team. These moments are pivotal for supporting, understanding, and addressing any upcoming challenges they might face. Prioritising a people-first culture is at the core of my daily agenda, and I practice it every day. 10am: The key to any company’s success is its team. My executive assistant, Aimee, and I have been a formidable team for 17 years. She schedules my meetings during my most productive morning hours. I advocate for meetings to be concise, ideally wrapped up within 30 minutes, emphasising the importance of preparation and punctuality. I embrace the philosophy of work-life integration, which feels seamless when you’re passionate about your work and surrounded by people you respect. For me, heading home is just a change of scenery rather than an end to my workday. 8pm: I make it a priority to spend at least an hour with my children before their bedtime, barring any unavoidable commitments. This time is non-negotiable for me; it’s my absolute boundary. To unwind at the end of the day, I engage in weightlifting sessions followed by a relaxing sauna, which I’m fortunate to have installed at home. This routine helps me transition from the day’s responsibilities to personal time.FORGING FOUNDATIONS IN THE KINGDOM: ALL ROADS LEAD TO EXPO 2030 REGISTER INTEREST TO ATTEND CONSTRUCTIONWEEKLIVE.COM SCAN TO VISIT WEBSITE FOR SPONSORSHIP ENQUIRIES Moutaz Gadelhak Commercial Director T: +971 4 444 3177 M: +971 58 287 6309 E: moutaz.gadelhak@itp.com FOR EVENT ENQUIRIES Karishma Vithalani Senior Events Manager T: +971 4 444 3226 E: karishma.vithalani@itp.com 5 Wednesday 5th June 2024 Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Bronze SponsorSilver Sponsor Gold SponsorGold SponsorGold Sponsor Supporting Partner Supporting Partner Supporting Partner Supporting Partner Supporting Partner Supporting Partner Supporting Partner | PROJECTS | 14 APRIL 2024 Set amidst the coastal hills of the Gulf of Aqaba, NEOM’s newest launch Gidori is an exclusive private golf community located in the coastal hills of the Gulf of Aqaba and one of the latest additions to the evolving regional development in northwest Saudi Arabia. He highlights the pivotal role of innovative technologies and partnerships in achieving Ariston’s goal of sustainable comfort across the Middle East, Turkey, and Caucasus. There is a strong legacy of over nine decades backing the brand. What has been the business model driving the company? The Ariston Group’s purpose is to off er “Sustainable Comfort for Everyone.” A purpose that translates into the commitment to provide everyone, across the globe, with high-quality heating and hot water solutions while preserving the environment. The Group is focused on ensuring the greatest comfort at the lowest energy cost, providing worldwide access to the most effi cient technologies. To strengthen and renew its commitment, in 2018, the Group defi ned its strategy and goals that would lead the company to incorporate medium-term targets, which will eventually lead the company to the achievement of its ultimate targets. Can you elaborate on your plans for 2024? In 2024, Ariston Group is focusing signifi cantly on sustainability, which aligns with our core value of “Sustainable Comfort.” With a history of over four decades committed to this ethos, we are actively integrating sustainability into our business strategy. Following COP28, Ariston Middle East is expanding its portfolio of sustainable solutions, all of which comply with the new regulations in the UAE. Our projects in the UAE showcase advanced water heating systems that leverage technology to signifi cantly reduce energy consumption. Esteemed establishments such as Double Tree Hilton and Navita Hotel have embraced these solutions, resulting in considerable energy bill savings. Notable communities like Golf Link Villas, Mirdif Hills Development, and 320 Villas in Ras Al Khaimah, exemplify the use of Ariston’s solar sustainability into its core strategy by 2022. As a result, it laid out specifi c targets closely monitored each year, including establishing a sustainability governance framework. In 2021, after launching an Initial Public Off ering and getting listed on the Euronext Milan stock exchange, the Group defi ned a new ESG vision, further developed in great detail in 2022. 2022 also marks the end of the fi rst phase of Ariston Group’s sustainable journey. Therefore, a new vision has been developed with the key purpose of leading the company towards 2030 through a clear roadmap that is pivotal in supporting Ariston Group in achieving its strategic ESG objectives. As a leading actor in sustainable development, the company is aware that sustainability means a long-term vision and objectives, which can be achieved only through a solid path of actions and initiatives. 2030 is the Group’s centenary year. This is why its 2030 ESG roadmap sets out a detailed and structured plan built on short- and | INTERVIEW | APRIL 2024 19 Heat pumps stand out for their eco-friendly operation, capturing free heat from the air and achieving up to 80% energy savings compared to conventional methods. Additionally, Ariston is adopting alternative refrigerants like propane (R290) and R513A to cut CO2 emissions. Solar thermal solutions are also eff ective, with solar collectors fulfi lling approximately 76% of total energy needs, thereby considerably lowering emissions. How does Ariston’s heat pumps and thermosyphon solar system solutions reduce overall energy costs in the Middle East region? Heat pumps, which draw heat from the air and transfer it to the water, exemplify environmentally conscious technology, which lowers electrical consumption by up to 80%. In addition, the abundance of sunshine in the region accounts for the popularity of Ariston’s thermosyphon solar system, a remarkable example of our renewable and high-effi ciency solutions. The toughened glass of the collectors minimises energy loss, and the prismatic surface creates a greenhouse eff ect. The solar collectors cover around 76% of the overall energy consumption, signifi cantly reducing CO2 emissions, gas consumption, and energy costs. The remaining 24% is covered by the electrical resistances installed in the tank of each thermosyphon. Tested against hail for Ariston’s projects in the UAE showcase advanced water heating systems that leverage technology to signi cantly reduce energy consumption Alberto Torner, Head of Ariston Group in the Middle East, Turkey, and Caucasus energy systems for water heating. Others, like the Courtyard by Marriott, Dubai, showcase the synergistic use of both technologies, providing even more impressive results. We are also working closely with DEWA, SEWA, and Dubai Municipality to champion energy effi ciency and increase awareness. How does Ariston perceive its role in infl uencing the transition towards sustainable energy? Regulations worldwide may bear diff erent names, such as the European Green Deal, UAE Energy Strategy 2050, and the National Climate Change Plan 2017–2050, but they share a common direction. Companies must not only enhance their product off erings but also address every aspect of the value chain. Our “Road to 100” ESG strategy centres on fi ve key engagement areas: solutions, operations, customers, people and communities, and sustainable governance. In the thermal comfort sector, Ariston Group is going toward developing high-effi ciency electric heating equipment to replace fossil fuel technologies (GPL/NG), expanding hybrid renewable solutions, and investing in hydrogen as a key energy vector. Ariston is shifting its water heating development towards heat pumps and solar thermal systems, targeting sustainable residential and commercial applications. safety, it is the best hot water system, off ering free solar energy as a renewable source while requiring minimum backup for electric heating. The Middle East markets and UAE, in particular, have already accepted our heat pumps. Our projects implementing this progressive technology have been recognised with awards. Ariston’s versatile technology allows integration with water heating systems like solar panels, achieving a hybrid solution with minimal energy and gas usage. Over the past year, numerous projects have adopted heat pump technology, with many more in line over 2024. The industry is constantly evolving, with many companies competing for market share and new entrants continually entering the market. What makes Ariston stand out? The company is one of the global leaders in the sustainable thermal comfort sector, with fi ve representative offi ces in 43 countries, 28 production sites and 30 R&D centres across fi ve continents. This leadership position has always been accompanied by a far-sighted sustainability commitment, already deeply rooted in its founder’s philosophy: “There is no value in the economic success of any industrial initiative, unless it is accompanied by a commitment to social progress.” This vision represents the factor distinguishing the Ariston Group from others. In addition, a fundamental milestone took place on 25 January 1979, when Merloni Finanziaria S.p.A., now Ariston Group, became the fi rst Italian company to publish a Social Report, a groundbreaking step in integrating non-fi nancial assets into company valuation. This initiative positioned Ariston Group as a leader in non-fi nancial reporting in Italy and a pioneer in European sustainability eff orts. The report covered the years 1975 to 1977 and focused on social issues both internally and externally, anticipating the modern importance of ESG reporting. Next >
