While the month has come to an end, there is still work to be done to create a more inclusive society for these individuals. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is one of the most common developmental disabilities, affecting one in 20 children under the age of 15. Unfortunately, many children with autism face significant challenges when it comes to employment – very few go on to full-time employment, mostly because they lack the necessary skills and support systems. One way to encourage inclusivity and empower autistic children to gain independence is by establishing environments tailored to their specific needs. For communities and cities, this starts with the design phase. In fact, research demonstrates how designing autism-friendly settings benefits autistic children and young adults, amplifying the advantages attainable through appropriate architecture and design. Researchers and architects are responsible for identifying built environment characteristics that create negative sensory experiences for autistic children and addressing these through design features that enable distraction- free learning and growth opportunities. Accordingly, incorporating the needs of individuals with autism into the planning process can lead to more inclusive and accessible spaces for all members of the community. As inclusivity sits at the heart of The Sustainable City, the rehabilitation centre for children with autism was one of the main components of its master plan. Sanad Village Rehabilitation Centre in The Sustainable City Dubai encapsulates a secure, comfortable, and sensory-friendly environment, which can significantly contribute to a sense of support and ease for those on the spectrum. The centre’s focus on helping students transition to independence is exemplified by its innovative simulation area, which assists children in confronting real-life situations and developing crucial life and work-related skills. A representative of The Sustainable City concluded: “The importance of designing autism-friendly spaces in the construction phase cannot be overstated. By designing inclusive environments and autism-friendly architecture, we can help individuals on the spectrum better navigate their surroundings and reach their full potential.” The Sustainable City Dubai is preparing children in the autism spectrum for independence by designing inclusive environments The rehabilitation centre was one of the main components of the master planInspiring Solutions For Tomorrow IDEAL STANDARD MENA T + 97148042400 | E idealstandardgulf@idealstandard.com IDEAL STANDARD DESIGN & SPECIFICATION CENTRE Building 7, Happiness Street, City Walk, Dubai, UAE | T + 97143096000 www.idealstandardgulf.comNext >
