Ibrahim was appointed as CEO of the business in July 2017 and has spearheaded Arcadis through its transformation, growth and success in the region while leading a team of 1,600 ‘Arcadians’ across the Middle East. Ibrahim said one of its biggest successes over the past 12 months is that they continued to progress and strengthen the business in the middle of a global pandemic. Despite the unforeseen challenges brought about by COVID-19, the rm worked closely together with its people and ended the year on an exceptional note; far exceeding its nancial targets for the year and securing a strong order intake for 2021. Over the past 12 months, Arcadis Middle East has worked with a number of well-known clients across the region, including Ashghal in Qatar, Aldar, Modon, ADNOC, Majid Al Futtaim in the UAE, Diriyah Gate Development Authority and Public Investment Fund (and subsidiaries) in KSA on some of their most exciting projects, providing them with a wide- spectrum of services under its Design & Engineering and Program Management service lines. Ibrahim revealed that on the back of signi cant wins in 2020 and continuing in 2021, they exceeded its planned targets for their revenue expectations and forecasting to nish 2021 on a very strong note. Simon Karam makes a return to Construction Week’s Power 100 list in 2021 after being placed at number 76. As the director of Sarooj Construction Company (SCC), he continues to direct the contractor on major projects in the Sultanate of Oman. Sarooj Construction Company serves the growing needs of Oman and its people and as a full end-to-end service provider, its range of services can tackle any construction challenge. SCC provides earthworks, geo-technical, marine, infrastructure, airports, roads, buildings, electrical and mechanical works, and site temporary facilities to the oil and gas sector as well as other industries in Oman. Karam has been previously regarded by Construction Week as among the 20 most influential Arab leaders in the Middle East and North Africa construction industry, which was published in 2019. The Omani contractor has also been working on various contracts that were secured for the Liwa Integrated Plastics Complex project and Duqm Refinery in the Special Economic Zone in Duqm (SEZAD). Additionally, SCC’s MEP division has worked on Majid Al Futtaim’s Mall of Oman project. Its work included dismantling overhead lines, laying power cables, relocating substations, and installation of street lighting. 75 76 KAMIRAN IBRAHIM SIMON KARAMPOWER 100 JUNE 2021 CONSTRUCTION WEEK 61WWW.CONSTRUCTIONWEEKONLINE.COM Saeed Mohammed Al Qatami, the CEO of Dubai Financial Market-listed real estate developer Deyaar returns to the Power 100 list in 2021. Established in 2002 with a paid up capital of AED 18.38 million, Deyaar has grown exponentially over the past decade to become one of the leading real estate development companies in the region In the last 12 months, the developer noted signi cant progress on its landmark projects - Midtown development and Bella Rose projects – but also hospitality projects in the UAE. Deyaar Development appointed Gammon & Billimoria the $100m (AED370m) construction contract for the third and fourth phase within its 46ha Midtown community, while the developer handed over its Bella Rose project in January 2021. For its hospitality portfolio, Deyaar opened the Millennium Al Barsha Hotel in August 2019 comprising 109 apartments and 299 hotel rooms, plus a Moroccan restaurant. The company reported revenues of $78.43m (AED 288.1m) and net pro t of $3.56m (AED 13.1m) for the rst nine months of 2020 ending 30 September. Speaking exclusively to Construction Week in Novemeber 2020, Qatami said they have plans for a $217.7m (AED 800m) residential project in Business Bay that they are looking to announce in H1 2021. Dubai-based multi- disciplinary real estate development and investment company, Select Group’s Rahil Aslam returns to the Power 100 list this year. Select Group has completed several construction milestones across Dubai in 2021 despite market pressures brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic. In September 2020, Jumeirah Group, the global luxury hospitality company and a member of Dubai Holding, opened the 508-unit Jumeirah Living Marina Gate, a serviced-residence development, located in the heart of Dubai Marina. Jumeirah Living Marina Gate is the third and nal tower to be opened within the Select Group’s agship Marina Gate development. The development comprises 104 serviced apartments and 389 private residences, including an executive penthouse, and 15 villas that are available for sale. Meanwhile, most recently in February 2021, Select Group marked a construction milestone on its two-tower 349-unit 15 Northside in Business Bay, as the residential development reached 50% completion. The 15 Northside tower is Select Group’s rst project in Business Bay. The development is Select Group’s 15th project and is set to be handed over by the third quarter of 2022. Founded in 2002, Select Group is among the leading privately- owned real estate developers, with a work force of over 750 employees across the GCC and Europe. 77 78 SAEED MOHAMMED AL QATAMI RAHIL ASLAM62 CONSTRUCTION WEEK JUNE 2021 POWER 100 WWW.CONSTRUCTIONWEEKONLINE.COM Rider Levett Bucknall’s (RLB) Managing Director for the Middle East, Sam Graham, comes in at number 79. Graham took over as Managing Director of Rider Levett Bucknall in 2017 and overseen the company’s continued strong performance despite working in challenging markets brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic. During his time at the company, Graham has helped the rm venture into new markets, owing to project wins in Bahrain, Lebanon, Ethiopia, Sudan and Kenya. RLB is a rm that has been present in the Middle East for over 35 years providing cost management and quantity surveying, project management, claims prevention and resolution, and advisory services. RLB has worked on some of the biggest projects in Dubai including Expo 2020 Dubai’s Al Wasl Plaza, The Address Residence Fountain Views and Bluewaters Wharf Retail and Island infrastructure. In 2020, the company rolled out an Asset Optimisation services line designed to help existing owners, operators and occupants make ef cient use of their space, plan maintenance programmes, and control and optimise future expenditure. Speaking to Construction Week in October 2020, Graham said launching this service is a result of the region recognising the need to invest in the assets developed over the recent decades. Graham has supported the rm’s vision for service excellence in rolling out its bespoke technology to make the delivery of it’s services ef cient, accurate, and easier for asset stakeholders to interpret. As part of this move, the company recently launched locally an application called RLB Field that they use to capture and analyse asset data collected from their site surveys. The information is collected, analysed and reported on, enabling property owners to monitor the condition of their assets over time, using their simpli ed interactive dashboards. RLB’s Asset Optimisation team works with developers and contractors to provide them with life cycle costing studies and help them achieve their sustainability targets. 79 SAM GRAHAMPOWER 100 JUNE 2021 CONSTRUCTION WEEK 63WWW.CONSTRUCTIONWEEKONLINE.COM Another new face for Construction Week’s Power 100 list is global construction and energy law specialists Fenwick Elliott’s Managing Partner Patrick Stone, who is placed at number 80. Stone took over as Managing Partner for Fenwick Elliott’s Dubai of ce at the start of 2021, but has been a Partner since the end of 2018 where he moved from the UK to lead the expansion of its practice in the Middle East. Despite dif cult market conditions, Stone has attracted a number of signi cant new clients across the MENA region engaged on some of the largest construction, energy and infrastructure projects in the region. Fenwick Elliott’s recent and current arbitrations have been focused on major rail projects including two of the Riyadh metro lines in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This particular matter includes claims and counterclaims with a combined claim value of more than $1bn. They are currently acting on a signi cant arbitration in relation to a light rail project, as well as advising on a number of other high-pro le transport infrastructure projects, in the region. They are also acting on a high-value arbitration in relation to a renewable energy project for a client based in the UAE. In terms of its revenues, Fenwick Elliott said it was con dent that they will continue to see a steady increase in revenue over the course of the remainder of the year, which will allow further growth within the region. One of the other new names to enter the 2021 Construction Week Power 100 list is King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) Partner, Joanne Strain, who comes in at number 81. Strain has been the Partner at King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) since 2016, where she became the rst female promoted to partnership at KWM in the Middle East. Strain has led a close-knit team in a rapidly evolving work environment. KWM’s transition to the virtual working landscape necessitated navigating cases predominantly within virtual dispute resolution platforms while strengthening relationships with clients, many of whom continued to operate in the built environment on site. As one of three Middle East partners, Strain has been at the forefront of the businesses transition. She implemented permanent changes to working practices within an environment that considers the individual needs of each member of the team. KWM’s move to represent clients in entirely virtual, paperless hearings in both the DIFC courts and in large construction arbitrations is a notable success story of the last twelve months. Strain recently concluded a matter for a client before the DIFC Courts, which saw both emergency hearings and Court of Appeal hearings convened and successfully conducted via online platforms. Strain was also a panellist alongside other construction lawyers for our Dispute Resolution Question Time Dubai event in February 2021. 80 81 PATRICK STONE JOANNE STRAIN64 CONSTRUCTION WEEK JUNE 2021 POWER 100 WWW.CONSTRUCTIONWEEKONLINE.COM Kleindienst Group’s Chairman, Josef Kleindienst, comes in at number 82. Kleindienst Group is the developer of The Heart of Europe — the $5bn master-planned leisure tourism island destination which is 4km offshore from Dubai. Kleindienst has accelerated construction activities for The Heart of Europe development and states that all those associated with the group remained COVID-19 free. Kleindienst focused on all six islands where construction or nishing touches are actively happening. Handover of Phase 1 of The Heart of Europe commenced in December 2020. The group accelerated construction at its Porto no hotel – with units being tted; nishing touches were added to the olive trees garden and promenade. Construction also progressed at the Côte d’Azur with all 4 hotels facades being completed and tting out is in the nishing stages. They also opened a show unit at the Monaco hotel and completed Phase 1 of Grand Azur pool, the largest and most sustainable pool in the Middle East. He added that the group aims to conclude the sale of all additional release lists comprising of hotel suites and villas by the end of this year, and complete the entire $5bn project through 2022 and 2023, including new ‘surprise’ enhancements. Danube’s Director and Partner, Atif Rahman comes into Construction Week’s Power 100 List for 2021 at number 83. As the Director & Partner of Danube Properties, Rahman started the construction vertical of Danube Group in the beginning of 2014. He oversees the entire business operation and remains solely responsible for all decision making. Rahman’s main highlight during a turbulent year was being elected as the Founding Board Member for the United Nations of ce for Disaster Risk Reduction for the National UAE Board. Rahman has been actively engaged in life-changing initiatives, promoting resilient practices in the entire Middle East region. Danube launched several residential projects over the past 12 months and achieved sales growth despite the pandemic. They sold 97% of Olivz – launched during March 2020 and overall the company’s revenue has increased as they sold 95% of its entire portfolio. Danube is also ramping up activities in terms of delivery. Elz and Lawnz by Danube are progressing well and Miraclz & Bayz have obtained the Building Completion Certi cate. Rahman also exclusively revealed to Construction Week that apart from reinforcing the local market share in Dubai, they want to continue diversifying its business through 2021 and 2022. This includes starting property development business in two new countries and addition of a new vertical in Dubai as a forward integration. 82 83 JOSEF KLEINDIENST ATIF RAHMANPOWER 100 JUNE 2021 CONSTRUCTION WEEK 65WWW.CONSTRUCTIONWEEKONLINE.COM Rising 10 places into number 84 for Construction Week’s Power 100 list is U+A’s Managing Director Pedram Rad. Rad has been with the company more than 16 years and since 2010 promoted as Chairman of the board and Group Chairman to overlook all branches including UK, KSA and Canada. Over the past 10 years, Rad has expanded the company from a boutique architectural rm in Dubai to a Multidisciplinary Design Studio with architecture, interior design, master planning, landscape, construction management, BIM and sustainability sectors. Rad has been integral to increasing the rm’s workforce from 40 to more than 200 people. He has opened of ces in Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, London and Montreal, and Rad also revealed that they have upcoming branches in South Africa and Singapore. Rad also told Construction Week that are looking to expand its GCC operations by potentially opening up an of ce in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The highlight for the business over the past 12 months, according to Rad, was sustaining its people and business with great support from its clients and carefully navigated through the pandemic with minor impact. Some of its notable project successes over the past year include Arabian Ranches 3, Yas Mall Re-development, Amaala Eco Family Hotel, Neom Eco Marina, 3D printed house, Deyaar Midtown Phases 4 & 5, Durres Master Plan and Marassi Vista in Bahrain. Rad told Construction Week in an exclusive interview that U+A is aiming to make its presence stronger in Saudi Arabia, which is witnessing a series of transformations with the development of multi-billion dollar gigaprojects to support the nation’s Vision 2030 agenda. The company opened its Saudi Arabia of ce in 2019 and Rad “remains optimistic” about a successful journey towards the country’s Vision 2030 agenda. Rad will also be participating in this year’s Leaders in Construction UAE event where he will be a panellist for our ‘Constructing in a Post-COVID World’ panel on the 22 September in Dubai. 84PEDRAM RAD66 CONSTRUCTION WEEK JUNE 2021 POWER 100 WWW.CONSTRUCTIONWEEKONLINE.COM McDermott is a fully- integrated provider of technology, engineering, and construction solutions. Linh Austin, who is the company’s Senior Vice President for its Middle East and North African region, remains on the Construction Week Power 100 list for 2021 at number 85. McDermott has continued to show why it is among the big players for construction in this region and has put forward plans for future despite operating under dif cult market conditions brought upon by the global health crisis. In a move to enhance its nancial exibility for continued project implementation and to strengthen its balance sheet, the New York Stock Exchange-listed rm secured approximately $560m in new capital through a series of transactions. Closed at the end of 2020, the transactions were designed to further demonstrate con dence in the company’s operations, increase liquidity, and fund future growth opportunities. The engineering and construction rm has secured commitments from certain existing lenders and shareholders for these transactions, as well as approval from the Steering Committee comprising certain existing letter of credit and term loan lenders. McDermott is also working on a joint venture project with Petrofac and Samsung Engineering Co at Kuwait National Petroleum Company’s (KNPC) hydrocracker unit at Mina Abdullah Re nery. The facility is second largest hydrocracker unit in Kuwait and is licensed with a feed processing capacity of 50,000 barrels per stream day (BPSD). Oman’s Muscat Securities Market-listed (MSM) construction giant Galfar Engineering & Contracting SAOG appointed Dr Hamoud Rashid AI Tobi as its CEO in May 2020 and he enters into Construction Week’s Power 100 list for 2021 at number 86. Under his leadership, Galfar is solidifying its position as one of the top performing construction companies in the region, with a speci c focus on roads and civil infrastructures. Since Al Tobi took over the business, he has tried to maintain the construction rm’s reputable position in the Oman market by winning several contracts. In July 2020, Galfar was awarded a $28.5m (OMR 11m) contract from energy company OQ Exploration and Production for the construction of pipelines at the rm’s concession areas. The development of the pipelines will range 120km across OQ’s site and the completion period of the works will end on 30 June 2021. The move was part of the rm’s endeavours for obtainment of contracts in the oil and gas sector and to enhance its income. Hamoud Al Tobi said that the award of the contract would be important in underpinning the company’s revenues and boost its project capabilities. The company is also working on the $7bn (OMR2.69bn) Duqm Re nery in Oman, where it scooped a $2.3m (OMR 885,503.5) civil works contract for a tank foundation project under sub- package A of the EPC Package 3 Offsite Facilities. 85 86 LINH AUSTIN HAMOUD AL TOBIPOWER 100 JUNE 2021 CONSTRUCTION WEEK 67WWW.CONSTRUCTIONWEEKONLINE.COM Egis International Middle East CEO Alaa Abu Siam comes in at number 87. Abu Siam joined Egis in early 2020 and has prioritised employees’ engagement, business growth and client satisfaction since coming on board. Egis Middle East had solid revenue and order book resilience in 2020. Positioned on the fastest growing engineering, consulting and operations domains Egis is poised to accelerate its growth through its ambitious strategic priorities. Egis has worked on some of the largest ever projects in the region, such as the Program Management and Technical Support Services for the Implementation of the “Green Riyadh” Strategy (package 1 and 2), the Design and PMC Services for Amaala Air eld Project (WP2) and PMCS Program for King Khalid International Airport (Riyadh Airport) in the aviation domain. Other projects represent Egis’ wide range of services and offerings, such as the supervision for the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of Al Ghouse Road in Kuwait; post-contract professional consultancy services for design, build operate and maintain contract for Integrated Industrial Wastewater Treatment Works Phase I in Doha, Qatar; support to Hamad Medical Corporation by providing multi discipline project/facility management personnel to health facilities; and project and construction management services for Kuwait International Bank 13 branches. Sultan has been with KEO for 38 years and has been CEO for over 32 of those years, and President and CEO for the past 4 years. Some of the major successes for KEO over the past 12 months, despite challenging market, conditions are that they opened an of ce in Europe and won a lot of work in the Saudi Arabia and Qatar markets. In terms of project portfolio, KEO has been involved with numerous high-pro le projects in Saudi Arabia including mega housing projects, a new golf course, public realm schemes, and high-end hotel projects for some of the largest developers and government agencies. In the UAE, they have been working on several high-pro le Dubai and Abu Dhabi properties as design and construction consultant. In Qatar, they have a large numbers of staff employed on mega infrastructure projects to help the country prepare for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Finally in Kuwait, they have been heavily involved in serving the Public Authority for Housing Welfare on a number of new Green eld townships. In terms of revenues, KEO forecasts a 10 – 15% increase in 2021 revenues on the back of what was healthy business development performance in Q3 and Q4 of 2020. The company is seeing revenue increases across the board in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait as investment activity and a need for new or upgrade of infrastructure and new commercial, industrial, and residential properties. Coming into Construction Week’s Power 100 list at number 89 is RMD Kwikform’s Divisional Managing Director, Paul Williams. Having a presence in the UAE and wider Middle East region for more than 40 years, RMD Kwikform is regarded as a market leader within the industry and has continually brought new products, safety and ef ciency and technical innovation to the market. Among the key projects that the rm has worked on include successfully delivering The Royal Atlantis Resort and Residences, as well as Expo 2020 Dubai’s Al Wasl Plaza, among other projects within Expo 2020’s 4.38km2 site. RMD Kwikform is continuing to focus on wider market opportunities, exploring and evaluating opportunities to expand its footprint across the wider Middle East and North Africa and Levant region. The rm has identi ed Saudi Arabia and Qatar as its main markets for growth throughout the course of 2021 as the planned mega-projects continue to mobilise in the Kingdom as part of the government-back Vision 2030 agenda, while Qatar will continue to offer opportunity in the nal build ahead of the Fifa World Cup in 2022. With more than 28 years of experience in technical, operations and senior business roles across facilities management, construction and engineering projects, Harrison has used his expertise in managing critical environments to proactively lead Emrill through the COVID-19 pandemic. He joined Emrill as Technical Director and was subsequently promoted to CEO in April 2019. This marked the rst time the company had appointed this title, demonstrating its ambition to grow and expand operations regionally. Under Harrison’s direction, Emrill has worked closely with clients, adapting cleaning methodologies and the delivery of world-class services to new applications. Harrison has been a con dent and competent presence, and clients have provided positive feedback regarding Emrill’s strong foundation and leadership. He has been instrumental in the company entering new sectors and winning signi cant new contracts while also prioritising the well-being and safety of Emrill’s employees, clients and their residents. Some of the major successes for Emrill over the past 12 months include combating the COVID-19 pandemic by allocating specialist teams and equipment to the UAE Government’s National Sterilisation Campaign.
