As the Expo team gets busy with the final leg of activities, Construction Week sat down with Ahmed Al Khatib, Chief Development and Delivery Officer at Expo 2020 Dubai to get exclusive details into the final phase leading up to the grand opening on 1 October 2021. The conversation shaped inside Terra - The Sustainability Pavilion, which was opened earlier this year for public visits. “In general, all the construction has been completed in terms of the organiser works. Everything that we had to deliver has already been delivered,” said Al Khatib. Expo 2020 Dubai has placed a target for all the participating countries to complete their pavilions by July 2021. According to Al Khatib, the team — which is referred to “as a tribe” — is also “continuing to look at the operational aspect of the Expo”, which was supported by the opening of the Sustainability Pavilion, earlier this year. He said: “During this time, we benefitted a lot from the operation perspectives, in terms of dealing with the visitors and how to guide them. We also had our volunteers here and it was a live example for everybody to test a mini Expo.” Al Khatib reflected on the journey of Expo 2020 Dubai right from the bidding to the design and construction stage, while also sharing details about the challenges that crossed their paths and how the Expo overcame them to become the “most sustainable” World Expo. In April 2021, Expo 2020 Dubai became one of the most sustainable World Expos ever after eight infrastructure projects across the expo site were awarded the highest rating under CEEQUAL, the internationally recognised sustainability assessment for civil engineering. Talking about the CEEQUAL recognition and taking Construction Week through the journey of achieving success, Al Khatib said: “We did place and set very challenging KPIs and targets. In order to meet and achieve what we wanted, we appointed a third party to monitor and report our KPIs, while also informing us if we needed to increase our performance. At the beginning, it was very difficult to deal with those KPIs, and achieve them, but we are very proud that we have achieved eight recognitions by CEEQUAL through eight different projects at the Expo 2020 Dubai.” Al Khatib has been associated with the World Expo since day one, and has seen it all. “It has been a very long, tough, and challenging journey and there were lots of ups and many downs.” For Al Khatib, bringing the World Expo to life has been a “priceless” achievement, and wouldn’t have been possible without the “leadership support and teamwork”. Students in the first cohort in the Middle East are generally active in real estate or a related field, such as banking, real estate finance, or development. The flexible part-time blended learning format makes the MSc Real Estate ideal for working professionals, with the opportunity to join regular face to face course conferences with faculty and peers, hosted in Dubai. The programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and is taught by a team of leading academics experienced in the global real estate industry. The programme content meets the needs of people working in a dynamic global industry which is facing a range of issues, such as rapid urbanisation and the challenge to urban planning; climate change and energy sustainability; digital transformation and changing end-user lifestyles and expectations. The programme combines academic excellence with the development of transferable skills that are essential for a career in real estate in the private or public sector, internationally. It is also designed as an intensive fast- track conversion course for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). The key themes of the programme are commercial awareness, globalisation, and sustainability, understanding the role of real estate in society, business, and the end-user. Students can choose from a range of study units covering topics such as the fundamentals of real estate, markets and property cycles; responsible property investment and finance; methods of property valuation; strategic asset management, risk management and sustainability; emerging future trends in urban development in global cities; the future ‘smart’ city in a global context; understanding of land use policies and making the best use of land resources. There is also an opportunity to conduct practice-based research on a topic related to the course. In addition, all students have the opportunity to attend face-to-face course conferences (or virtual online conferences) twice a year – hosted in Dubai - providing opportunities for team working, networking and mentoring to underpin the academic content. Professor Selma Carson FRICS FCIArb FHEA, Senior Lecturer for the MSc Real Estate at The University of Manchester said: “The real estate sector is at the heart of many local and regional economies and is one of the world’s largest industries, attracting investment and talent, and creating wealth and career opportunities. The built environment is also at the core of the quality of life for all communities but is being challenged. “Recent research has highlighted the need for real estate professionals to add value by providing leadership in providing solutions rather than just traditional technical skills. The changing nature of real estate requires new skills, from hospitality to data analytics. “This is the essence of our MSc in Real Estate and we aim to help our students develop the necessary skills, knowledge and professionalism to compete effectively in a challenging regional and global market.” The Middle East Centre has developed into the largest and fastest-growing centre in the university’s international network and has supported more than 2,800 part-time master’s students in the region, since opening in 2006. The University of Manchester was named as the world’s 27th best university in the QS World University Rankings. EDUCATION JUNE 2021 CONSTRUCTION WEEK 9WWW.CONSTRUCTIONWEEKONLINE.COMNext >
