(EDSCO) 49Wall: PREZIOSI38 CONSTRUCTION WEEK APRIL 2021 EDITOR’S LETTER WWW.CONSTRUCTIONWEEKONLINE.COM It’s been an eye opening few weeks. It’s unfortunate that the cliché phrase of “living in a man’s world” is still a reality despite all the measures and steps that has been taken till now, making it clear that much more needs to be done. The #ChoosetoChallenge theme for 2021’s International Women’s Day embraced an inclusive culture, one that valued different perspectives and challenged whether the construction industry is doing enough for women to flourish. Inclusion has been a long-running and persistent problem for the construction sector but the responses that we received during our coverage of International Women’s Day was a real breath of fresh air – the message is bolder than before - but the industry’s implementation of this message is not quite over the line yet. We spoke with many incredible women across the construction landscape in March and the consensus is that inclusion is key for businesses to grow and innovate. One of my objectives since becoming Editor of Construction Week has been to provide more opportunities and platforms to highlight those influencing and raising standards in the industry – irrespective of gender. Admittedly, in the past, we haven’t done enough. But I want to drive change and cause disruption for the industry. As part of our plans to challenge viewpoints on diversity and inclusion, we announced on International Women’s Day the launch of our first conference focusing on women in construction. Comprising a keynote speech and four panel discussions, the Women in Construction conference is designed to address whether construction firms are doing enough to empower employees. I truly believe the conference will be a game- changer for the industry and is a further step in the right direction. However, this is just the beginning for us. Let’s make every day International Women’s Day. It’s time to make diversity and inclusion the steel and mortar that holds the construction industry in place. While it is healthy to talk and discuss these issues, we need to ensure that action is taken. More women in leadership positions, no pay disparities and more women on-site will be clear evidence that the industry is moving forward. Overall the message is clear, I believe that we shouldn’t be coming to a point where we need a day to address equality issues. My vision is to see the day when we have abolished all forms of inequality and I strongly believe that this will be possible in my lifetime if we work together. Why there is still a way to go to address gender equality Reflecting back on International Women’s Day, the general theme is that there are some positive movements towards gender equality, but we are not quite there yet “OVERALL THE MESSAGE IS CLEAR, I BELIEVE WE SHOULD NOT BE COMING TO A POINT WHERE WE NEED A DAY TO ADDRESS EQUALITY ISSUES. MY VISION IS TO SEE THE DAY WHEN WE HAVE ABOLISHED ALL FORMS OF INEQUALITY AND I BELIEVE THAT THIS WILL BE POSSIBLE IN MY LIFETIME IF WE WORK TOGETHER” Ashley Williams EditorNext >
