Crowned this year’s number one KSA rm, Al Bawani has experienced another year of steady growth and diversi cation that has continued since it was established more than four decades ago. The group works with clients in more than 15 cities across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The clients vary from government, semi-government and private enterprises. Al Bawani has a direct workforce of over 12,000 employees and a signi cantly healthy supply chain. The Al Bawani brand has grown from a modest civil-works rm into a full- edged turnkey general contracting corporation with a sizable portfolio, strong nancial position, and a signi cant presence in a broad range of industries. For 2020, Al Bawani has won several major contracts including The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC) where they will be responsible for the civil and structural works across 40 hotel villas on the Southern Dunes site of the tourist destination, as well as utility works and site-wide roads. Additionally, the Saudi-based company will also be responsible for the earthworks and stabilisation of each of the villas, along with their structures and underground utilities connections. Al Bawani’s scope also includes the construction of the infrastructure networks for the Southern Dunes resort, such as sewage, potable water, telecommunications and landscape lighting. Other notable achievements include winning a contract to build the $89.3m (SAR335m) Al-Kharwa Investment Tower and has worked extensively with multiple social infrastructure and real estate developments in the Kingdom. In March 2021, Al Bawani’s Director/ Board Member Eng. Nasser Alshawaf was a panellist for Construction Week’s virtual KSA Infrastructure Summit sitting on the social infrastructure panel. Part of the Alshawaf family, Eng. Nasser discussed the availability of funding for both equity and debt for social infrastructure, as well as assessing the legal structure and the contractual arrangements surrounding it during a 45 minute panel discussion. 1 AL BAWANITOP 50 KSA APRIL 2021 CONSTRUCTION WEEK 11 WWW.CONSTRUCTIONWEEKONLINE.COM Battling Al Bawani very closely for top spot, Nesma Holding have also made significant strides in 2020 and 2021 despite unprecedented market conditions. Some of the highlights for Nesma in the last year comprise winning the airport delivery contract at The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC) alongside Almabani. The contract will entail the construction of airside infrastructure works, including the design and building of a Code F runway 3,700m, Code B seaplane runway, parallel & link taxiways and pavement works, aeronautical navigational aids, aerodrome ground lighting, airside utilities, helipads, roads and associated buildings. Meanwhile other notable achievements came from Nesma Trading where they achieved two million safe man-hours without lost time injury (LTI) at the Al Jawharah Mall project in the city of Jeddah, while Nesma Water & Energy were awarded a 125,000m3 sewage treatment plant contract in September 2020. The contract was awarded to the contractor by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture. The scope of services entail work on the sewage treatment plant and main pumping station in KSA’s Tabuk city. NESMA HOLDING 2 ALKIFAH CONTRACTING COMPANY 3 Another notable year came from KSA contractor AlKifah Contracting Company who have also been awarded some signi cant contracts across the Kingdom. Among notable movements for the Saudi-based organisation was being awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to build 40 apartment buildings at The Red Sea Development Company’s Coastal Village community. The 40 apartment buildings will consist of 40 blocks of single and double occupancy units at the Coastal Village, which will eventually become home to the 14,000 employees set to operate the destination. AlKifah will use precast concrete panels, prepared at a new dedicated precast manufacturing facility being built in the project area. The National Housing Company has signed several agreements for infrastructure development and housing projects across Saudi Arabia over the past 12 months. At the end of 2020, Saudi Arabia’s National Housing Company signed two agreements with Saudi-based contractors Al-Fahd Company for Trade, Industry and Contracting and Al-Rawaf Trading and Contracting Company to implement infrastructure works for the Al-Mashriqiya and Orchid housing projects, which are located in Riyadh. At the beginning of 2021, NHC also inked two agreements with Tadawul-listed Al Rajhi Bank to nance the development of new housing projects in Riyadh and Jeddah worth $533.2m (SAR2bn). Other notable projects for the National Housing Company is the Danat Al-Khobar project in Al-Khobar Governorate, with the project being launched in cooperation with Afaq Al- Tameer Investment and Real Estate Development. The project is a part of National Housing Company’s under-construction projects that are being developed in cooperation with the private sector. NATIONAL HOUSING COMPANY 5 Coming into fourth place is the Ministry of Housing who have been instrumental in organising and facilitating a balanced and sustainable housing environment for Saudi nationals. The Ministry of Housing has developed programmes that stimulate the private and public sectors through cooperation and partnership in organising, planning and monitoring to facilitate housing for all community segments at a reasonable price and quality. Among the Ministry of Housings’ signi cant achievements include implementing more than 22 housing projects for the 87,000m2 Jawharat Al-Rusayfa project in Makkah as part of its Sakani initiative. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Housing aims to increase residential ownership among its citizens to 70% by 2030. More than 90 under-construction projects have been implemented across the kingdom, in order to provide more than 140,000 residential units, while more than 209 residential land plans have been launched to provide more than 176,000 plots of land to Saudi families. The programme provides Saudi nationals with access to residential plots, self-construction residential housing, prefabricated housing units, and under construction housing units, among other options. Established in 1965 as a Saudi Arabia closed Joint Stock Company, SAJCO is a family-owned business with several branches in Jeddah, Madinah, Qassim, Abha, and Dammam. For more than 50 years since its establishment, SAJCO has been associated with road construction and maintenance projects, other infrastructure projects including bridges, tunnels, underpasses, dams, sewage and water-supply networks, dewatering, water and fuel strategic reservoirs, and piling works. In July 2020, Qiddiya Investment Company (QIC) — the developer of the 366km2 Qiddiya gigaproject — awarded a $190m (SAR700m) contract for the construction of its major road and bridges to SAJCO. The contractor will build 45km of roads and seven bridges and grade- separated interchanges that will provide access from the main approach highway, deep into Qiddiya’s Resort Core towards the Motion Zone and to the Golf and Equestrian Community. SAJCO has worked on several transport and infrastructure projects for the Ministry of Transport. SHIBH AL JAZIRA CONTRACTING COMPANY (SAJCO) 11 SAUDI CONTRACTORS AUTHORITY (SCA) 12 Taking the spot at no. 12 is Saudi Contractors Authority (SCA), which aims to organise and develop the contracting sector is the Kingdom. Chaired by Eng. Osama Bin Hassan Al Afaleq — who was ranked no. 4 on Construction Week’s Power 100 list in 2020 — SCA has been organising the Future Projects Forum (FPF), which entered its third iteration in 2021. Over 37 government and private entities participated in the forum this year from across various sectors including oil and gas, petrochemicals, energy and electricity, infrastructure, housing and mining. SCA has been planning to launch the “model contracts” and “advisory services” initiatives, it had announced in February 2021. The initiatives at making the sector an attractive investment environment in line with the requirements of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. Last year, SCA’s Governor, Eng.Thabet Al-Sawyeed, headlined Construction Week’s Leaders in KSA conference. While delivering the keynote speech he said that there were approximately 166,000 registered contractors working in Saudi Arabia, of which approximately 98.5% were small and medium contractors. These registered contractors employ around 3.2 million people in the KSA, of which 13% to 14% are Saudi nationals.18 CONSTRUCTION WEEK APRIL 2021 TOP 50 KSA WWW.CONSTRUCTIONWEEKONLINE.COM Entering the list at no. 14 is Saudi Amana Contracting, a subsidiary of UAE-based Amana Contracting Group, which is a design and build contractor providing modular construction solutions. Saudi Amana Contracting delivers projects through its three of ces in Saudi Arabia, in the cities of Riyadh, Khobar, and Jeddah. The company is headed by Hattan Ghazi who is the General Manager of Saudi AMANA Contracting. Among many of its projects, the company has been quite acclaimed for its work on The Red Sea Development Company’s (TRSDC) 28,000km2 The Red Sea Project. Saudi Amana Contracting was awarded a contract by TRSDC in 2019 to design and build a management hotel. Manufacturing for the same project was subcontracted to DuBox Precast Products, a part of the wider Amana Contracting Group. Meanwhile, the company has also been associated with TRSDC for the development of the rst prefabricated units, which were built in a newly established facility in Saudi Arabia. These units will form a part of the Coastal Village development, which will be home to 14,000 staff who will operate the destination following completion. SAUDI AMANA CONTRACTING 14 Touted as Saudi Arabia’s largest construction rm, Saudi Binladin Group (SBG), which was incorporated in 1967, is a subsidiary of Binladin International Holding Group (BIHG), established in collaboration with Istidama Holding Company, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Finance. Considered as an in uential name within the GCC’s construction sector, despite going through a nancially dif cult time for many years, SBG, known for its work on the Grand Mosque in Makkah, has been undergoing a group-wide transformation programme designed to see BIHG absorb, rebuild, and reinvent the rm under the mandate of its board of directors. In order to spearhead its transformation plan, SBG recently appointed industry veteran Grigoris Christo des as its Chief Transformation Of cer (CTO). Following Chrito des’ appointment, Khalid Al-Gwaiz, CEO of BIHG said that it was the rst time that in its “90-year history”, SBG has been undergoing a challenging and complex transformation and restructure, which reportedly includes a $15bn debt restructuring. May 2020 saw the constrution rm reportedly place thousands of its employees on unpaid leave. It had also reduced the salaries of approximately 50,000 employees by about 33% during Ramadan, last year, to re ect shorter working hours. SAUDI BINLADIN GROUP (SBG) 13TOP 50 KSA APRIL 2021 CONSTRUCTION WEEK 19 WWW.CONSTRUCTIONWEEKONLINE.COM Making the Top 50 Construction Firms in Saudi Arabia list at no.15 is The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC), developer of the 28,000km2 The Red Sea Project, touted as the world’s most ambitious luxury tourism development. Headed up by John Pagano as the CEO — who earlier this year was also appointed as the CEO of AMAALA — TRSDC launched the Coral Bloom concept for The Red Sea Project’s hub island in February 2021. The nature-inspired designs will be launched across the 11 resorts on the hub island and was created by architectural firm Foster + Partners, designed to blend in with the island’s pristine natural environment. While construction work continues to rapidly progress at The Red Sea Project, TRSDC marked a major milestone when it secured the ISO31000:2018 certification, which is the International Organisation for Standardisation’s highest available standard in risk management. Earlier this year, the gigaproject, which is backed by the Kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund, Public Investment Fund (PIF), completed the first stage of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Cities platinum certification in the ‘plan and design’ category for the project. THE RED SEA DEVELOPMENT COMPANY (TRSDC) 15 DIRIYAH GATE DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY (DGDA) 16 Entering this year’s Top 50 Construction Firms list is Diriyah Gate Development Authority (DGDA), which is overseeing the development of the $20bn Diriyah Gate gigaproject in the Kingdom. The Diriyah province, located on the north-west of Riyadh, is being touted as one of the largest habitable mud cities, overlooking the UNESCO World Heritage Site of At-Turaif — the original home of the Al Saud Royal family. Construction on the gigaproject commenced after ground was broken on one of the development’s foremost areas called the Bujairi Square, in June 2020. Diriyah Gate will comprise a mixed use area of dining, Diriyah Art Oasis - an arts centre designed to support and inspire the production of contemporary Saudi art and international emerging artists, as well as At-Turaif. In October 2020, DGDA appointed United Engineering Construction Co (UNEC) to lead construction on the ve-star Samhan Heritage Hotel, located in the city of Diriyah within the province of Riyadh. Jonathan Timms, DGDA’s Chief Design & Development Of cer spoke at Construction Week’s KSA Infrastructure Summit in March 2021. Timms highlighted Diriyah Gate’s infrastructure needs and said that it comprises 55km of roads and 15km of tunnels.Next >
