< PreviousTrending commercialinteriordesign.com June 2022 20 Now, Triennale Milano and Memphis Milano present 'Memphis Again,' an exhibition directed and curated by Christoph Radl at the Triennale that runs until 12 June 2022. Sofa beds and more The exhibition, held in the elegantly elongated Curva gallery, presents more than 200 pieces of furniture and objects, from bookshelves and vetrines, to sofa beds and fruit bowls, in a diverse selection of materials that include wood, ceramic, steel, and fabric, all produced between 1981 and 1986 for the Memphis collection. The objects are arranged around the 100-metre long arts space in chronological order, giving the feel of a fashion show in which the observer in the one who is on the catwalk. Furniture and music by American house DJ Seth Troxler lends the feel of a nightclub to the environment, where illumiation comes from quotes by critics, architects and designers projected on the walls. Though the exhibition is neither an homage nor a historicisation, it is a homecoming of sorts. With Ettore Sottsass as the point of reference for the Memphis group, and warbara Radice as artistic director, its first collection was presented at Salone del Mobile back in 1981. Its objective today, just as it was back then, is that of directing the attention on the expressive and cultural possibilities of a design that goes beyond marketing. Memphis was born with the desire to adjourn the language of design and architecture; as an alternative proposition to solve industrial functional problems, while underlining the emotional, psychological side and aspect of the issue and of the discipline. Each designer was said to be free to design what they wanted, without any restrictions. Later, a company was founded to distribute and sell what was produced. Designer Karl Lagerfeld was a fan, and when the singer David Bowie's estate auctioned his art collection in 2016, it was revealed that he had collected more than hundreds of Memphis furniture pieces. The group generally disregarded what was perceived as 'good taste' at the time, and the need to get rid of certain conventions is one that's still very contemporary in the design industry. Sottsass, who died in December 2007, was quoted as saying: "The fact is that we no longer are scared: I mean the fear of having to represent or not represent something or someone, élites or derelicts, traditions or boorishness. We no longer fear what the past sends along nor do we fear what the more aggressive future sends." The importance of Memphis for the world of design can also be seen in Triennale's Museo del Design Italiano, where the display ends in 1981. With objects, photographs and graphic materials, it offers a special focus on how this cultural movement marked the start of a new era in the production of design both in Italy and around the world. Recently acquired by the Italian Radical Design group, Memphis continues to influence the public's taste in the fashion industry, in cinema and in television. To this date, Memphis' liberating spirit is a source of inspiration for many. The growth and change that the industry has seen over the years have been exciting. Sustainability has been a key focus of interior design in the region. I believe it will further accelerate and bring about positive change in the sector. Also, adaptability is an underlying theme with interiors in the region, and we have witnessed this during the pandemic. For the awards, entries need to be aware of the regional requirements while also focusing on a wider appeal. Many touchpoints should be kept in mind here, such as the weather and the audience. Though Armenian in origin, he was raised in Cairo in an environment that allowed him to enjoy the city's multicultural background. He travelled to France to study interior design and in 1993 started a small Paris- based design studio specialising in the creation of handmade tableware and home accessories, before returning to Cairo in 1997 and launching Alchemy Design Studio, followed by a furniture brand of the same name in 2010. Along with other Egyptian design moguls, in 2005 he set up the Egyptian Designers' Forum and has been a judge in the Cairo Design Awards for the last fi ve years. At our own CID awards for the fi rst time, Karim said he will be reviewing nominations, "looking at projects that are true to its condition and context. A project that makes sense and that refl ects local ideas, which can go global." For Karim, a winning entry is one with "quality of the presentation, the authenticity of the project if it makes sense or not." Armed with an insatiable need for innovation and fl awless taste, he has been trying to subtly transpose the Cairene sensorial landscape into his designs. Renowned for his ability to tell every client's story, Karim believes that a good design is the one that combines cultural codes, traditions, modern visions and new technologies. Not a follower of trends, Karim said he prefers to "observe what's going on in the world and I am interested in how things that happen socially, politically and historically can give us a projection of what can be done." He said: "Dubai is a unique place where it is always possible to experiment and propose new ideas and visions. I love returning to this great metropolis, a city of wonders and whose architecture shines like a skilful play of volumes in the warm light of the Emirates. Dubai is undoubtedly the city of the future, which is why the opportunity to bring together the community of architects and designers in such an important event is fundamental for a new open dialogue that marks the possibility of growing in terms of dedication and quality. "When I fi nd myself being a judge, I always look for something outside the box, a combination of research, inventiveness and expressiveness, something that combines attention to the customer's wishes with other types of objectives such as sustainability, a respectful production environment process, construction methods and selection of environmentally friendly materials, strategic use of energy in relation to the different places where the projects will be placed.
