He launched Monarca in April, following which the new business has signed agency agreements with two well-known international lighting brands: WE-EF and Lucent Lighting. Skander's Monarca specialises in bespoke architectural and interior design projects, with one aim: exquisite creations for its clients. Following our brief interview last month, where he talked about launching his new business, Commercial Interior Design sat down with Skander to discuss Monarca's new showroom in Dubai and the infl uence of social and economic forces on people's personal spaces. "I created Monarca because I wanted to work with everyone and approach different markets as well as all types of projects. For instance, we have the best manufacturers for lighting, furniture, art, AV, and a host of various other industries. So we have looked for people who can bring something unusual to the table and help our clients fulfi l a concept that wouldn't have been easy to achieve a few years ago. "For me, Monarca is about fashioning convenience in realising these spaces that our clients are building," said Skander. He pointed out that the last couple of years has made things uncertain – some businesses have been scaling up, and some have been scaling down. In the same way, he noted that some people have realised the benefi ts of working from home, and others want to keep their work-life separate from their personal lives. "It's a very mixed bag; however, I don't think there is a shortage of people who wants to experiment with their spaces – and some of these spaces have even changed in the way they are being used," he added. "I think many of the trends have remained relatively similar; some industries are going for a more quirky, unusual style, which I presume works as a marketing method of re-engaging their clientele and wanting them to come back to the space because it has a new feel to it now. Others are going for a more standardised feel, which I suppose is the difference between being independent and working with chains." Skander Dardour, founder and CEO of Monarca AN EXHIBITION OF ART When asked about his decision to open a showroom in Dubai, Skander said that there is a substantial tactile element to the buying process, which is becoming less and less common due to a digitised world, which, in his words, is a real shame. "The showroom will open in September, but that's just a small part of my dream," revealed Skander, adding that it's great to sell products all over the world, but it's not really the same as meeting someone face- to-face and getting to pick up and hold a product; to see the craftsmanship and how it looks and feels in natural light, without it being a computer-generated example of a photo on a website. "The showroom is about enabling high-end manufacturers and artists from all over the world to have their products on display in Dubai for people to come and experience it in person. In addition to this, there will be paintings, sculptures, and other handcrafted pieces from local and international artists and creators displayed in the showroom as a gallery. "It's going to be an exhibition of bespoke art that I can't wait for people to experience – for them to get the best level of involvement with the products that we will be offering," Skander concluded.Next >
