Jacqueline is our Young Designer of the Year 2021 Awards season is gathering pace and it won't be long before we're celebrating at the Commercial Interior Design Awards in person. Winning an award continues to generate value all year round, and no-one appreciates that better than the winners themselves. Young Designer of the Year is always one of our favourite categories and makes for a fantastic story, following the eventual winner from nomination to successful career. So, we've kicked off the 2022 awards cycle by interviewing last year's winner, Jacqueline Tan Co. We hope you fi nd her story as inspiring as our awards judges did. Hopefully another source of inspiration was the recent CID Power Panels conference. The inaugural event saw speakers and panelists pondering on the design issues of the day. We've focused on what the retail panel discussed in this issue's Special Report on retail design. Also in the May Special Report are deep dives into the new face of supermarket design, a case study on lighting a fashion store for Saudi shoppers, and an opinion piece on experiential retail experience. This month's First Look takes us out of the mall and into a restaurant, specifi cally Hunter & Barrel in Yas Bay, Abu Dhabi, which is the work of the collective creative mind of Design Partnership Australia. By Emirati artist, Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, Between Sunrise and Sunset was inaugurated by Her Excellency Noura Al Kaabi, the UAE's Minister of Culture and Youth. Curated by Maya Allison, Executive Director of The New York University Abu Dhabi Art Gallery, the exhibition presents a major new work by Ibrahim – a room-fi lling sculptural form made up of 128 abstract and organic elements created from raw papier-mâché and natural materials including dirt, leaves, tea, coffee, and tobacco. Ibrahim's sculpture clusters human- sized, tree-like forms to fi ll the exhibit space. The commissioned artwork is derived from the artist's connection to his hometown of Khor Fakkan – a city at the edge of the Al Hajar mountains in Sharjah – while the title refers to his experience of the light there. Between Sunrise and Sunset is open to the public at the Biennale Arte 2022 until Sunday 27 November 2022. A virtual tour of the exhibition is also available on the National Pavilion UAE website. Since 2009, the National Pavilion UAE has curated untold stories about the UAE's arts and architecture at the Venice Biennale.
