Primary colours and concise geometric patterns typify the fabrics of the late American designer Girard. Now based in Girard's home city of New York, after studying interior design at Milan's Istituto Europeo di Design and product design at London's Central Saint Martins, Merve Kahraman uses iconoclastic Girard fabrics in her new range of furniture. Her decision to specialise in industrial design stems, she says, from her desire to include furniture and products in the spaces she designs both there and in New York. Flavoured with Turkish 'boncuk' or evil eye charms and elements of Greek mythology, all pieces are made by artisans in Kahraman's native country of Turkey and are fully customisable.Latest products commercialinteriordesign.com July 2021 52 IRIS chair In Greek mythology, Iris is the personification of the rainbow and messenger of the gods. Inspired by the arch of colours, the Iris chair is a combination of layers and intentions. This minimal and elegant geometrical shaped chair can fit to any environment and an adjustable back part comforts users every time they sit onto it. STARBOY pouf boucle Inspired by celestial spheres, the pouf is a "metaphorical object from the skies which has been projected to the observer on earth" says Kahraman. The beige boucle and matte brass base represent the mystery of the cosmos but there's no enigma – the pouf can be customised in different sizes and finishes.Latest products 53 July 2021 commercialinteriordesign.com ABIDE table in pink This version of Abide features a pink, blue and dark green surface matched with pink and green upholstered checkered legs from the archive of New York architect and designer Girard, affectionately known as Sandro. At its coast with Crimea, the Mediterranean-like locale of the inland water became a holiday retreat for 19th century nobility, including last tsar, Nicholas II, who built the elegant Livadia Palace on the Black Sea coast. Among the upscale resorts on its coast are Mriya, a spa and hotel complex that's designed by British architect Sir Norman Foster. Its interiors are the work of Elena Krylova Design Studio and the owners the Black Sea Alliance (BSA) can count the Black Sea restaurant chain among their portfolio. Working on the latest Moscow branch of the Black Sea marks a long-term cooperation between the hospitality management company and Krylova, who specialises in creating opulent residential interiors for VIP clients. For this project Krylova's studio took the traditional atmosphere and products of the Black Sea to create the concept for the eatery in the President Plaza business centre on Kutuzovsky Prospekt in Moscow. With rivers providing an abundant supply of fresh water, the upper layers of the 436,400 sq km Black Sea are less dense than its saltier lower layers. The studio's designers used a gradient of a complex blue-green hue, to symbolise the changing colour of the thickness of the Black Sea water, and arched shapes in the bold and geometric Memphis style at the bar, with fish images and a dark ceiling that create the feeling of being at the bottom of the sea.
