His eponymous studio was founded in 2017, two years after he graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a degree in furniture and product design. Although the brand may be relatively new to the market, it's already proved itself capable of not just representing its founder's talent, but also championing world-class heritage craft. Born to an English mother and a Czech father, and raised between London and Prague, Wood's upbringing fuelled a passion for heritage craft that is deep- rooted in his ancestral ties. His family originates from Northern Bohemia, a region in the Czech Republic with a rich history in glass production and his ancestor, Frans Wais, was the brother- in-law and business partner of Daniel Swarovski, founder of the Swarovski crystal dynasty. Together they created and patented the fi rst electric glass crystal cutting machine that revolutionised the glass industry. Inspired by his heritage, glass remains the primary material in Wood's designs and much of what he uses is still produced in the next village on from his grandparent's farmhouse. The strength of the studio's products lies in the partnerships it fosters with the artisans, Wood says, adding that he "feels a deep sense of responsibility towards them and the communities that their crafts support. "It's hugely rewarding to work with makers at the top of their game and a thrill to be able to contribute to industries with such rich histories." Designed and assembled in north London, there are fi ve ranges in the collection, each with customisable designs, including ceiling lights, wall lights and fl oor lamps that are contemporary in thinking but timeless in style. New to the market is the Rosa collection, which has been designed to showcase the opaque beauty of natural marble. Featuring a singular pendant light that can form a tiered chandelier, the design incorporates a backlit Rosa Aurora marble disc that emits a soft, warm illumination, pierced by the natural veining of the stone. The double-faced LED base creates an additional glow with refl ections and light play framed in a crystal sphere. Wood explains: "When designing, it's important to distil a concept down to its essential characteristics to ensure that the message is as clear as possible. The paradox is that achieving simplicity can often be the most diffi cult thing of all." We're sure Frans Wais would approve.
