You have to make it fall," Che Guevara was quoted as saying. 2020 was a real 'tree shaker' of a year for the commercial interior design industry as we pivoted, adapted and embraced new ways of working, socialising and communicating with each other. Here at Commercial Interior Design, the year ended with positivity, as we saw accolades handed to the industry's best at our 14th annual awards ceremony. In the fi rst issue of 2021, we interview Paul Bishop, who was named designer of the year. Paul is known for shaking things up in his designs, but there's a lot about him that's resolutely traditional too. As we're talking about resolutions, then more self-care is an easy one to tick off, especially when our region is home to sumptuous spas, like SENSASIA Stories Spa at Kempinski Hotel at Mall of the Emirates in Dubai. In this issue we look inside the interiors created by fellow award-winners Roar and hear the fi ve essential design elements that create an unforgettable experience for spa goers. We also meet the LA-based, AI-inspired artist who has created a unique, hi-tech installation for a UAE hotel, while vintage vibes are afoot in our special report on bathroom design. Happy new year! In 2020, things were very different for the interior design industry and so we've decided to do things differently, too. The Commercial Interior Design Power 50 will appear in the February 2021 issue of the magazine. We will rank industry powerhouses across four categories – Designers, Fit-out Firms, Suppliers and Young Talent – to give defi nitive lists of top players in the game. For the designers, we'll compile a top 20 from your nominations. The other categories will be a top 10. The order will be decided by the editorial team here at Commercial Interior Design. There will be a full break down of categories on our website, www.commercialinteriordesign. com, where you'll also fi nd a link to make your all-important nominations. The nominated person should be the top talent Nominations are open for the Power 50 2020 Commercial Interior Design revamps the all-important rankings in your company, but the nominations should be done before January 10. A reminder that 2019's top fi ve were Isabel Pintado, senior vice president at Wilson Associates, Paul Bishop of Bishop Design, Roar's Pallavi Dean, LW founder Jesper Godsk and Jonathan Ashmore, founder and principal at Anarchitect. The fi nal rankings for 2020 will be chosen by our editorial team and will celebrate talent, but also recognition of resilience and innovation. 2019 Power 50 top fi veDesign news 7 January 2021 commercialinteriordesign.com Clickspring designs world's "most advanced" media hub US agency Clickspring Design is behind the Dubai media offi ce that's being called the world's "most advanced." The headquarters of Asharq News, a new global media network, is spread over four fl oors and 5,300 sq ms in Dubai International Finance Centre (DIFC). Offi ces, briefi ng rooms, editorial spaces, newsrooms and technology areas are connected by a dramatic central atrium. Here ribbons of curved LED bands are mounted on glass fi ns around the perimeter, gradually decreasing in density from top to bottom. Global stock market ticker data scrolls continuously within the installation's displays. An important part of the project narrative was transparency, so to avoid the limits of traditional 'black box' studios, Clickspring opened them to its newsrooms, while integrating the control rooms into the on- air look. It all opened in winter 2020, after construction fi nished in spring. Design students win internship through Herman Miller comp Design students triumphed in a competition collaboration with furniture brand Herman Miller. Undergraduates from American University in Dubai, Manipal University, DIDI, Ajman University, Heriot Watt, Zayed University, Amity University, Al Ghurair University and American University of Sharjah were invited to take part in the four week-long challenge. They were asked to focus on the investigation and design of an effi cient and fl exible furniture system station for designers, architects and students in design and architecture, suitable for use in the home, offi ce or academia. More than 50 entries were whittled down 12 designs. From these, the top three students were offered internships with three leading architecture and design fi rms in the region. They were Tanseera Muhammed from Manipal University; Abdallah Alawadi from American University Dubai and Niria Alcuriza from Heriot Watt, who were chosen by Gensler, Roar and Woods Bagot respectively. CapaCare Protect, created by paint manufacturer Caparol Arabia, went under the microscope in a US lab. It was found to have a 99.9 percent 'kill' rate against Human Coronavirus and H1N1 infl uenzae A. These tests follow the launch of the product in the UAE market in April 2020. Experts from four countries – UAE, Germany, UK and USA – worked together to produce Capacare Protect, which is manufactured in the UAE. The paint product has already been used over the past three months on commercial interiors projects in the region. It's suitable for "homes, hospitals, clinics and day-care centres," according to Martin Rosocha, managing director at Caparol Arabia, who adds: "This is a ground-breaking development." German-founded brand Caparol was established in 1999 in Dubai and has a showroom in Al Quoz industrial district, with paint manufactured in Sharjah. Pantone announces "optimistic" duo for Colour of the Year 2021 Colour authority Pantone has picked not one, but two colours of the year. Ultimate Grey and Illuminating, an "optimistic" hue of yellow, are the two shades that Pantone has named as its shades of choice for 2021. The American fi rm believes that the pairing of shades – PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating – will help people "fortify themselves with energy, clarity and hope" in an uncertain world. "The selection of two independent colours highlight how different elements come together to express a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting," explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. It's been fi ve years since Pantone's roving experts last decided on a duo of colours, naming PANTONE 15-3919 Serenity and PANTONE 13-1520 Rose Quartz and Colours of the Year 2016.
