Studioworks, are behind the look of new restaurant Lana Lusa. You might recognise their work from BB Social Dining in DIFC. The latest project is a neighbourhood- style space that serves classic, traditional Portuguese dishes from Dubai's Wasl 51 mall. Décor is authentic as can be, with loads of elements created by Portuguese artists – including colourful ceramic plates from Barcelos, and copper light fi xtures and cork-fashioned menus from Porto adorning the interiors. Recipes come from founder Jessica Viveiro's grandmother's journals and we might spot her in the family photos that decorate the walls. There's a relaxed outdoor terrace, too, surrounded by greenery. Available to order through a new website, Minimal and White has its core focus on functional design and will offer customers minimal and sophisticated pieces designed by Karen herself, with an emphasis on technical precision and refi ned craftmanship. As well as the usual furniture suspects such as side tables, coffee tables and indoor or outdoor seating, the online store will offer customers a slice of Karen's contemporary accessories, art prints and more, with some curated picks. With a focus towards quality materials and sustainable local production, key pieces of the launch collection include the solid oak Ova Bench, ash veneer Elle Bed, and powder-coated steel Eva Side Table. Karen explains how the collection came about: "Whilst working on my interior design projects and renovating my own villa, I realised that my style of furniture wasn't readily available here." Isabel Pintado warns the hotel industry is taking a step backwards over plastic use Isabel Pintado, Wilson Associates' SVP Africa, China, Middle East, Thailand and regional MD for Bangkok, Dubai, Shanghai, has voiced concerns over the boom in single-uses plastics during the COVID-19 global pandemic. She says: "Suddenly responsible habits have been thrown out the window to give way to a new massive shift towards single- use plastic consumption again in order to make hotel guests or restaurant patrons feel safe. "In recent months, I've noticed an excessive use of plastic wrappers used on single-use plastic utensils alone, never mind the introduction of plastic gloves being used in our everyday lives. This shift has unfortunately taken us back a decade in the effort towards saving our planet." Pintado called on designers to use their "privileged position" and skills to design and specify products that use plastic in a creative and responsible way.
