Collaborations with industry leaders have followed over the years, most lately with Rubelli, the Venetian family- run fabric company that's now in its fifth generation and has a showroom in Dubai's Business Bay. The new Armani/Casa Exclusive Textiles by Rubelli collection is rich with strong influences of modern artists Henri Matisse, Vasilij Kandinskij and Paul Klee. Tradition meets innovation as we see colour blocks created by embroideries, ikat effects and fantasy wefts juxtaposed to several variations on the theme of intertwined motifs, handwoven silk and technical supports. Intricate patterns and geometric shapes are enlivened by a colour palette of delicate pastel hues to classic neutrals, from vivid touches of brightness to powder tones.commercialinteriordesign.com October 2020 52 Latest products Piacenza/Panama Piacenza is a tribute to Giorgio Armani's home town in Northern Italy's Po Valley. Its palette recalls seasons of the countryside landscape, depicting the changing colours of fields, trees, sky and views as if filtered by the mist. The use of acetate yarns creates a shiny effect that comes in five combinations of rustic colours. In contrast, Panama is a plain fabric with a wavy surface that comes courtesy of the use of yarns from different materials. Its tone range is neutral to the more colourful verde, seen here. Perugia/pisa This fabric owes its name to the city of Perugia, in central Italy know for its breathtaking views and beautiful architecture The damier texture of this fabric recalls the ashlar details of those historical buildings, while Pisa is a high-performance fabric reinterpreting the classic canneté motif in a vertical way that's typical of the Armani style.53 October 2020 commercialinteriordesign.com Latest products Philadelphia/parma Available in four colourways, Philadelphia's design comes the large windows of skyscrapers: regular rectangles are embroidered to create a grid; a discrete checkerboard where irregularities give a concept of lightness. Underneath, wrinkle-resistant Parma fabric is easily applied to upholstered items and has four best-selling colours. Pisa/Piacenza/parma Pisa's look is immediately reminiscent of the Giorgio Armani knitwear collection and its sculptural details are like those admired on marble monuments in the eponymous Italian city of Pisa. Palaces, churches and typical Italian squares influence Piacenza and Parma brings us into the present day, as a updated version of the range's popular Faro fabric. The most challenging aspect of this project is that we were working within a circular space. Because of the layout, we had to working under a tight space with low ceilings, which challenged us to fi nd a way to visually open up that space so that guests can feel welcome. Additionally, we really focused on the design of our FF&E, for example creating banquettes that would fi t nicely against the curved fuselage and not to mention we had to also design ducts into the furniture in order for air conditioning to come up from the fl oor. What are the original design elements and what's been added? To allow guests the experience of being transported back in time, we used new materials that blend in with the plane's original elements and structure. Guests can peek their head into the original cockpit, as well as take a seat toward the front of the cabin next to original controls and instruments. We also kept the plane's 'constellation' window, once used to guide the aircraft by starlight on overnight fl ights. Another fun project for us – and perhaps the most telling of that era's style – was reupholstering 16 original airplane seats from a similar Connie plane to create a unique seating area for guests. We teamed up with fabricator Aaron Sciandra who reupholstered the seats in a plaid palette of pink, orange, red, and beige hues. World view commercialinteriordesign.com October 2020 56 Additional accents by Sciandra include the plane's window curtains, seat covers, and seatback pockets made so guests can feel like they're about to 'take off.' We've added banquette seating with fold-down drink holders upholstered in TWA's signature 'chili pepper red' color where guests fi rst arrive. The seating vignettes are a nod to the original styling of the TWA Commodore Club inside the original TWA airport terminal. We've also added a number of Eero Saarinen-style tulip tables as well as a serving station toward the back. What other updates were made to the plane interior? The most interesting and unique part of the plane interior is what we call 'the reveal.' To achieve this illusion, we created a one-foot-wide arch running almost the full circumference of the cabin at its belly, revealing the raw bones of the aircraft's shell that is backlit and protected by plexiglass. Has Stonehill Taylor worked on any similarly unusual projects? Though the Connie Cocktail Bar has been the most unusual interior project Stonehill Taylor has completed to date, many of our projects have made use of unique, historic buildings where we focus on seeking out the essence of a project's location to create an inspired and distinguished approach. The Refi nery Hotel in New York City was originally built in 1912 to house high-end retail and tea salon on the fi rst fl oor and various factories, predominantly hat making, on the upper fl oors. This duality is refl ected in the design of the hotel with refi ned public spaces in the lobby area and a more industrial and raw elegance in the guestrooms and rooftop bar. One particularly interesting detail is the ceiling of the indoor rooftop lounge space, which was made with wood salvaged from the dismantled water tank previously at the top of the building. Originally the Portland Press Herald building, the Press Hotel's design concept takes inspiration from the site's unique history, and the design team worked closely with Press Herald editors on selecting content from the newspaper's pages that were weaved into the design. The hotel serves as a showcase for Portland's emerging artistic expression.
