The UAE emirate's Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council and the digital gallery joined forces on two exciting initiatives. Crafts Dialogue, curated by Samer Yamani and Farah Nasri, yields four limited edition product collections that make use of craft traditions such as safeefah weaving with palm fronds, Murano glassblowing, ceramics, leatherwork and Emirati embroidery known as talli. Acting as a space for the exchange of knowledge, the Design Labs project pairs up local or international designers with traditional Emirati craftswomen from the Bidwa Social Development Programme. Its curator Farah Nasri says: "For both initiatives, collaboration is a key factor in the design process, whether it’s channelling two designer mindsets into a single, cohesive concept and a shared design language, or bringing together diverse perspectives and spheres of expertise to find new forms and functions for an under-utilised craft technique or raw material."commercialinteriordesign.com September 2020 54 Latest products Safeefah chair Artisans from the Bidwa Social Development Programme wove the upholstery of these chairs by combining safeefah and other weaving techniques with a new colour range. Laura Blasco, Juanmi Juárez, and Alex Estévez from Barcelona-based Mermelada Estudio and Emirati designer Ghaya Bin Mesmar worked together to envision the new use for the traditional process – furniture. Themes of privacy and protection are explored from the inspiration of 'areesh' houses made from palm fronds that are traditional to the UAE. Emirati talli x spanish leather Together Emirati designer Shaikha Bin Dhaher and Spanish designer Adrian Salvador Candela embrace the natural qualities of leather to create fruit bowls with subtle talli weaves, creating a dialogue between two crafts and cultures. The sculptural, curvilinear forms of this collection also evoke both images of desert dunes and the smooth folds in the drapes of women's veils.55 September 2020 commercialinteriordesign.com Latest products Safeefah X Clay The collaboration between Emirati designer Abdallah Al Mulla and Spanish designer Pepa Reverter pushes the limits of clay design by creating pieces that surpass a diameter of 60 centimetres and a height of one metre. Its clay stools and tables function as dining furniture and can be stacked together. You'll see they sport traditional palm frond safeefah weaves as decorative belts and elements. Emirati Clay x Italian Murano Glass Emirati creative Fatima Al Zaabi and Italian designer Matteo Silverio collaborate and explore the analogies between different materials, crafts, cultures and heritages. A daring experiment to bring together glass and clay, their work aims to enhance the craft dialogue by merging hand- and machine-made techniques. Each piece uses parametric design and digital fabrication tools to create moulds, while the artisans directly manipulated the materials to demonstrate how tradition and innovation can successfully coexist in the same project.World view commercialinteriordesign.com September 2020 56 LAVANDARIA MORINHA, VILA MEÃ, PORTUGAL Green tiling evokes water Soap opera Coin-operated laundrettes came to Europe, specifi cally the UK, in May 1949, with the fi rst one opening in Bayswater, London. Fort Worth in Texas was the home of the inagural laundromat, which was known at the time as a "wash- a-teria." Now there are more than 35,000 in the US alone.57 September 2020 commercialinteriordesign.com THE CHANGES Airing your dirty laundry has never looked so good Traditional methods of washing clothes inspired design studio Stu.dere to create the interior of this self-service laundry project in northern Portugal. Communal washing places have long been social spaces and with a lounge area and vending machine, this 21st century laundrette offers visitors the chance to linger while they clean up. Im ag es : Iv o T av ar es S tu d io Working with architects Ulisses Costa, the design studio developed a project that bridges the duality between traditional and modern. The purpose was to create a fresh and innovative environment, refl ecting the evolution of a society that seeks practical solutions for the management of its day to day chores, while bringing back the memory of the work of traditional community washers. The space that comes out of the merger of two stores into a 200 sq m area is divided into a self-service area and a specialised service area for garment repairs, dry cleaning and ironing. The two areas are intersected by a gridded metal gate that refl ects the shape of the ceramic tiling. These green ceramics from the Urban Atelier by ALELUIA CERÂMICAS were chosen as an allusion to the ceramic used in the olden day wash houses and provide a fresh, clean feel. Waterproof micro- cement poured over the fl ooring is easy to maintain and suitable for high traffi c. Suspended greenery spills from the ceiling and under the plants we fi nd a white marble worktable. This material was chosen to echo the blocks of stone in traditional wash houses, where people would slap and beat wet clothes to release the dirt. No such effort here, as under the gentle beams of Flos' Glo-Ball lamps by Jasper Morrison, customers are invited to relax. Inside the sphere, the artisan created an incised design and coated it with gold in the third fi ring to create a smooth look. Topped with curled pieces of clay, the lamp can be personalized in different colours and sizes. 2 Calia Bronze Draped Chair by Kelly Wearstler This dramatic chair, executed in solid bronze, effortlessly straddles the line between furniture and sculpture. The form is that of a simple dining chair draped in heavy fabric with a decorative braided trim. When cast in bronze and polished to a high sheen, that form takes on an ethereal and otherworldly quality. Time just enhances these materials. 3 The Origins of Never Artwork Wang Ziling creates astonishing sculptural paintings in which she explores our perception of external surroundings by reforming the structure of how we see and perceive things. While delving into the relationship between colours and their abstract manifestations, her works attempt to break with convention and explores a new a sense of freedom and generates unrestrained abstract forms that cannot be confi ned to the limits of traditional frames. The reason why it attracted me is that it takes the imagination to distant foreign lands of mountains, clouds and oceans. NIKKI BISIKER Dubai-based Interior designer Nikki Bisiker opens up on pieces that capture her personal tastes and ethos to create spaces that are not formula or ego driven, and refl ect her go-to colour of blue 12 3 45 4 Fish Labyrinth Velvet Screen Inspired by the atmosphere and colour palette of the marine life, this screen will fi nd its perfect place in refi ned décors dominated by neutral colours. The hinged panels of soft silk velvet are dyed with blue, azure, and green pigments and painted by hand with coloured pastes enriched with gold leaf to mimic the glittering sunlight refl ected on the sea. This superb piece is entirely crafted and painted by hand, using techniques of the Venetian tapestry. The reason this piece had to make my list, is that it is a perfect representation of a traditionally iconic piece, re-invented using contemporary colours and patterns. 5 Anemona Table for the Objets Nomade The Italian artist-designer duo behind Atelier Biagetti pays homage to the Adriatic Sea. Under the bevelled glass top, the sculptural, wave-like base is lined with sumptuous Louis Vuitton leather. Large enough to seat 12, the table is a natural centrepiece; a magnet for conversation and conviviality. This table draws the eye to the beautiful sculptural interior movement of lines, while the blue is reminiscent of diving into oceans.FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE VISIT WWW.COMMERCIALINTERIORDESIGN.COM/cid-AWARDS OR CONTACT ONE OF OUR TEAM TODAy For sponsorship enquiries: rebecca lockwood Sales director Tel: +971 4 444 3268 Email: rebecca.lockwood@itp.com For NOMINATION enquiries: JANE O'NEILL EDITOR Tel: +971 4 444 3626 Email: jane.oneill@itp.com For event enquiries: daniel Fewtrell Director of Awards & Marketing Tel: +971 4 444 3684 Email: daniel.fewtrell@itp.com For Table sales enquiries: anthony chandran table sales executive Tel: +971 4 444 3685 Email: anthony.chandran@itp.com silver SPONSOR category SPONSORs Social media SPONSOR WEDNESDAY 25th November jw marriott marquis hotel dubai table bookings are now open PRESENTED BY GOLD SPONSORS #CIDAWARDS FIT-OUT PARTNERNext >
