Pfefferberg connects a variety of spaces, from artists’ studios to concert and dance halls. In the heart of cultural venue Pfefferberg, we fi nd a bar, restaurant and in-house laboratory, lit up with Kerim Seiler’s large-scale site-specifi c neon light installation41 July 2020 commercialinteriordesign.com Bobois signature modular Mah Jong sofas. Upon entering from the surrounding bar garden – Berlin's second oldest, dating from 1850 – and through the 19th-century French wing doors, the resulting space breaks from the rules of formal spatial disposition, taking down barriers and encouraging visitors' experimentation with the space. An affi rmation of founders Oliver Mansaray and Daniel Scheppan's experimental and synergetic approach, the in-house laboratory – nested in the wall and projecting onto the bar– acts as an open workshop where modern techniques and culinary expertise and experience come together. Building on the infl uence, exploration and fusion of international food and drink cultures, Italian chef Ivano Pirolo, most recently chef de partie at two- Michelin-starred FACIL in Berlin, and Indian-born bar manager and mixologist Arun Puvanendran work together to offer a progressive and complementary selection. Sharing a longstanding passion for the discovery and fusion of international food and drinking cultures, Mansaray and Scheppan built on their respective careers in engineering and design to launch KINK. They explain: "We don't build walls. We tear them down. We bring together what belongs together: kitchen and bar. Not only do we create a unique space where restaurant and bar see eye-to-eye, we unite culinary and cocktail art into one cohesive experience." A restored industrial building has been reborn a restaurant, bar and in-house culinary laboratory, surrounded by galleries, artist studios and event venues. What's your fl avour? KINK brings together contemporary art, modular design and world gastronomy, to offer a both multifaceted and deeply personal visitor experience. The wide room is reinvested through a selection of contemporary installations and works presented throughout the restaurant and bar. At its core, suspended from its high ceiling, Swiss contemporary artist Kerim Seiler's Spaceknot (Pfefferberg) – a large-scale site-specifi c work consisting of more than 100 metres of red neon tubes – elegantly loops through the space. Separated into three spaces – a main room, a gallery and a window-enveloped 'Glashaus' – the different levels allow for distinct functions and ambiances. The vast main room fans out from its focal point; the central open kitchen and bar designed by Berlin studio Hidden Fortress, combined with sitting areas as a single overlapping, merged space for staff and visitors alike. Deploying the height of the room, the side mezzanine looks out onto the lower fl oor, revealing German artist Philipp Emanuel Eyrich's wall-embracing metalwork, in dialogue with Berberlin handcrafted rugs, inspired by North African Berber culture, and a set of Roche Modular sofas invite relaxation Mix it up at the in-house labObjects of desire commercialinteriordesign.com July 2020 42 Recently appointed projects director at boutique interiors agency TwentyOne06, Douglas heads up workplace design. Here are fi ve of his design favourites from a career spanning more than 15 years working for the likes of Microsoft and Gazprom. 1Arrangements Lighting Collection by Michael Anastassiades I've always liked modular designs and am appealed by how individual components can be reconfi gured to create different solutions. This piece, inspired by how jewellery links together, provides great versatility and can look sculptural and/or industrial depending on its use or setting. 2 Liquid Aluminium Table by Mathieu Lehanneur There are several pieces I could have picked from the French designer's portfolio, as there are many things to like in his diverse and creative product range. This is one of my favourites though, it's like a piece of water movement has been frozen in time. It would also look great in my living room. 3Jin by Jin Kuramoto I'd probably pick this chair on aesthetics alone, as I love the smooth lines and how the bulbous back and base ease off to meet the narrow edges, but this piece is also feather-light, super strong, and 100 per cent biological. The body is formed with thin layers of fl ax fi bers laid on top of each other to create a shell with an air core, that is so strong the surface makes the structure of the chair. It's a great piece of truly sustainable design. 4Thread X Trestle Table by Coordination Design While adjustable trestle tables are nothing new, this designer has created an innovative version with minimalist detail. A simple threaded oak rod is held by a contemporary steel cross frame, to create a sleek yet functional design. 5Alltubes Furniture Series by Muller Van Severen I appreciate the simplicity of this collection, which is made almost entirely from standard aluminum tubing. Using repetition along with only a few simple curves, the designer has created pieces that are both decorative and structural out of one basic material. 1 4 3 2 5 DOUGLAS DRUMMOND FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE VISIT WWW.COMMERCIALINTERIORDESIGN.COM/cid-AWARDS OR CONTACT ONE OF OUR TEAM TODAy For sponsorship enquiries: Laura Collinder Sales Manager Tel: +971 4 444 3576 Mobile: 971 55 401 1628 Email: laura.collinder@itp.com For NOMINATION enquiries: JANE O'NEILL EDITOR Tel: +971 4 444 3626 Email: jane.oneill@itp.com For event enquiries: daniel Fewtrell Director of Awards & Marketing Tel: +971 4 444 3 684 Email: daniel.fewtrell@itp.com For Table sales enquiries: anthony chandran table sales executive Tel: +971 4 444 3685 Email: anthony.chandran@itp.com silver SPONSOR category SPONSORs Social media SPONSOR WEDNESDAY 25th November Good luck to all our nominees!
