The watch has a new in house movement, the PF318, in a 33.7mm case displaying hours, minutes, small seconds, date and moon phase on a white mother of pearl dial featuring a lotus flower in solid rose gold. A sparkling bezel is adorned with 76 brilliant-cut diamonds. The PF318 self-winding movement has a power reserve of 50 hours thanks to two series- mounted barrels. The movement, which is visible through the watch’s sapphire case back, is decorated with the Côtes de Genève stripe. The original’s wave pattern on the dial has been brought back in pin-sharp precision thanks to the use or modern laser engraving, with Superluminova-filled hour markers standing proudly behind hour, minute and second hands. Less busy than the 1993 model, which had three subdials, the 25th anniversary models focus more on aesthetics that will appeal to the modern customer who may never get the watch wet. LONGINES LONGINES ELEGANT Given that ladies are wearing larger watches this year, we can see why the biggest sizes are proving particularly popular because they are likely selling to both men and women. You cannot go wrong with blue dials either, and the Elegant watches are fine examples with their sunray finish furnished with either baton indexes or more luxurious diamonds. Whichever combination of dial size, leather strap or steel bracelet, the watches exude elegance and attitude. Longines covered all bases with the 2018 line up of Elegant watches, with models sized at 25, 29, 34.5, 37 and 39mm that will appeal to both men and women. Raymond Weil Freelancer As one of the few remaining independent family-run Swiss watch brands, Raymond Weil has developed a loyal cus- tomer following in recent years, fuelled by its high profile musical collaborations. One of its most consistent performers in the Raymond Weil family is the Freelancer collection, and the men’s automatic really stands out. The dial, which features the clou de Paris motif in the centre, reveals but a glimpse of the balance wheel of the automatic movement that’s powering the watch.64 C EO M I D D L E E A S T JA N UA RY 2019 WHY THE ARCH LONDON TICKS ALL THE RIGHT BOXES FOR MIDDLE EAST TRAVELLERS THE ARCH LONDON IS A LUXURIOUS GEORGIAN TOWNHOUSE HIDEAWAY, ON A QUAINT RESIDENTIAL STREET IN MARYLEBONE, A STONE’S THROW FROM BOND STREET, HYDE PARK AND THE WEST END. Since being es- tablished nearly four decades ago, the venerable chain has become a favour- ite of meat lovers in cities and towns across the US, from Los Angeles to Washington DC. The DIFC edition, however, is only its second foray into the Middle East (after Jeddah). But for those of us who are fond of steak- houses, it was well worth the wait. Fogo de Chão’s core concept may come as something of a novelty for those of us living in the Emirates. It draws from the traditions of the mountainous southern Brazilian Serra Gaúcha region, which has a long his- tory of meats being slow-roasted over an oven fire by local horsemen, other- wise known as Gauchos. In practice, what this means for diners is that this isn’t a res- taurant for the faint-hearted. If one chooses the restaurant’s trade- mark Fogo Churrasco experience (AED 249 for lunch of AED 299 for dinner) they are treated to a con- tinuous and seemingly-never ending table-side service of various meaty Brazilian dishes, ranging from tender- loin and ribeye steaks to leg of lamb and chicken. Diners control the flow of the meat using a red-green card, meaning that if the red side if facing up, the waiters will walk by. If the green side is up, the meats will continue coming, along with a number of delicious sides rang- ing from warm pao de queijo (cheese bread) to crispy polenta, mashed po- tatoes and caramelised bananas. In the unlikely event that one hasn’t quickly gotten full from the meats and the sides, the restaurant – which is spread over a massive space in DIFC’s Central Park towers – also has a ‘mar- ket table’ serving an array of fresh ingredients inspired by Brazilian sta- ples, as well as Feijoda, a traditional black bean stew served over white rice and seasoned with a variety of ingre- dients, such as baked yucca flour. Various meats can also be or- dered as standalone dishes, and so can Chilean sea bass and pan-seared salmon. Taken on their own, this breadth of options and the novelty of Brazilian hospitality in the Ara- bian Gulf would make for a highly recommendable destination for din- ner or an extended business lunch. But that’s not all – the venue it- self is one of its greatest strengths, spread across a large open terrace with striking views of the Burj Khal- ifa and an elegant indoor area that never feels crowded. For meat lovers especially, it’s well worth a visit.
