Editor’s Letter 18 admiddleeast.com Visionary. It’s a word that’s heavy with meaning and expectation. The implication is of someone imbued with excellence in their chosen fi eld and the prescience to predict what’s coming next – to be able to create and roll with the wave of the zeitgeist. Our inaugural Visionaries Issue is full of such people, but the striking thing is that many of them are looking to the past while creating something that’s right for now. Perhaps the lure of nostalgia is particularly strong in our uncertain times, but the most compelling ‘new’ ideas are often rooted in what’s come before. The cover story (p.136) charts architect Carl Gerges’ design for new boutique hotel Capo in Batroun on Lebanon’s northern coast, which takes inspiration from the seafaring Phoenicians who founded the ancient city. Constructed almost entirely using a mix of beach sand and cement, the contemporary architecture is at one with its stunning location, with terraces modelled on Roman amphitheatres fl owing down to the sea. In the nearby village of Rachana (a mere 10 minute drive away), sculptor Anachar Basbous has just opened a boldly modern space to house his art, which cantilevers off the side of a hill (p.42). Inside, a 1954 bronze work by his father Michel Basbous – who turned Rachana into an open-air sculpture park – and a photograph of his parents take pride of place. New York-based designer Gabriel Hendifar’s parents left Iran after the revolution and his work draws upon impressions of a homeland he has never visited (p.116). The search for identity is often the catalyst for creativity through which beauty and positivity arises. Enjoy the issue. Vibe Shift P H O TO : MAR K C .
