We wanted the interior to be moody and secondary to the views, so it’s about an absence of white. We were able to work from the outside in with the local architect who created the shell.” To this end, Bush selected stone that worked for both the exterior and interiors and wood that worked in both contexts, too. The ceiling inside is clear cedar, but it has been manipulated to create visual interest; similarly, tongue-and-groove panelling in the large living/kitchen/ dining area conceal acoustic dampeners, but also became part of the aesthetic appeal. “Ultimately, we wanted an organic modernism, with many natural materials and lots of texture, patterning and warmth,” he adds. Bush was creating a home for a couple he describes as “self-made”, who had a solid budget for something ambi- tious, but weren’t sure what they wanted at all beyond the direction that they “like a lot of colour”. They put their trust in Bush and were delighted with the result: “They get a thrill out of people coming to the house for the fi rst time to visit and seeing them gasp. Because they didn’t have a fi xed idea of what they wanted, and we actually persuaded them to abandon everything they were thinking of bring- ing into the space and giving us free rein. It’s been exciting for them to learn to live in the house. They couldn’t visual- ise it when we began, and now they love it.” The project took three and a half years, and Bush inject- ed the colour the couple were looking for with a confi dent hand: “We incorporated jewel tones that contrast with all the black and bronze and darker hues we used. In theory it’s an odd combination to have in a lake house, but it’s dra- matic and we leaned into it, and it worked.” There are several ‘insider’ elements within the interior. Bush used modern chandeliers by Apparatus from New York, “because this is a big house, and their designs have a kind of brutal primitive style to them that occupy space in a bold way.” In the separate subterranean beach house that serves as a guest room, he created panelling that directly references Jean Prouvé’s prefab mid-century Maison Tropicale; the large circular perforations on a stainless-steel panel shielding a set of shelves are an obvi- ous homage to the doors and facade of the late French architect’s design for homes in West Africa in the 1950s. “Because of the tides on the lake, we had to make every- thing in that space fl ood-proof,” says Bush. “All the rugs are outdoor rugs, and all the furniture is for outside. We used teak and stainless steel, and generally made every- thing ship-like. Everything is created for a worst-case sce- nario, which isn’t to say it’s going to happen, but we used it as inspiration, and I liked Prouvé’s screens, because they make me think of port holes and maritime architecture. It belonged to a chic, industrial, international moment in design. There’s also a dialogue between that and the main kitchen. Overall, I’d say it’s a very masculine design, but it’s fundamentally about the environment it stands in.” jamiebush.com 132 AD_047_124-133_Arena_Lake Tahoe_12632774.indd 13205/10/2022 06:42:48 PMAndy Warhol’s portrait of Jackie Kennedy, sits above a Marc Newson console and Maison Gerad Stool in the entry hall.
