AD_047_68-77_Arena_Ibiza_12611259.indd 7004/10/2022 10:27:01 PM71 adorned with white-sand beaches and imbued with a cool, relaxed vibe, the Mediterranean island of Ibiza has long been the playground of a creative and cultured set, drawn to its top-notch restaurants, wellness retreats and inter- national music scene. For Fahad Hariri, owner and co-artistic director of interi- or-design agency Pinto - and who also happens to be a con- noisseur of electronic music – that inexorable pull led to him acquiring a holiday home on the south-east shore of the island 10 years ago, in an idyllic spot next to the beach of Es Cubells, facing out to sea. The house is one of fi ve residences owned by the Lebanon-born entrepreneur and architect which he has decorated with the Pinto design team. Hariri fi rst met Alberto Pinto in 2011, a year before the revered designer died, and shortly after Hariri had recently received a diplo- ma in architecture from Paris Ecole Speciale d’Architec- ture. He had recently decorated one of his apartments in minimalist fashion, all in white, to resemble a contempo- rary art gallery; however, he quickly became seduced by the eclecticism, colour and joy that characterise Pinto interiors. Alberto initiated him into the importance of fab- rics, colour and comfort within a home, and Hariri became a devotee, working so closely on his own homes with the agency in the following years that when Alberto Pinto’s sister, Linda, stepped down from running her late broth- er’s business last year, Hariri felt like it was a natural step for him to acquire it. Before taking over the company, while working on his own homes, Hariri formed a close relationship with Pietro Scaglione, then an interior designer at the agency – so much so, he says these personal projects were designed “with four hands”, and Scaglione now works alongside him as co-artistic director. Common to all Pinto projects is a focus on the client’s way of life and how it can be enhanced by their environment, so for the Ibiza house, Hariri want- ed “a colourful and joyful home which exudes happiness, to respect the spirit of the island: Mediterranean, bohemi- an, easygoing, multicultural and relaxed.” That spirit is apparent as soon as one approaches, in the outdoor lounge set against a wall painted in bold red and white stripes, and the alfresco dining area on the terrace, where cheerful red and white cushions contrast with a col- lection of blue and white Delft plates and vases displayed on the wall (collecting plates is a particular obsession of Hariri’s). The playful vibe continues indoors with a collec- tion of characterful vintage furniture and accessories, grounded by colourful Spanish grass rugs. Furnishing the interior was something of a race against the clock: the house was to be delivered in record time, just Previous pages from left: The outdoor dining room is decorated with blue and white Por uguese azulejo-style tiles by Almaviva; the house occupies a secluded spot on the south-east coast of the island, facing the sea. However, it was also important to Hariri that it should have “a very strong spirit”, and not the air of a project that had been delivered overnight. “I wanted it to have the feel of having existed for years, charged with the memories of its occupants,” he says. As such, he and Scaglione hunted down vintage pieces, chosen for “their poetry, their charm or their playful side”, rather than their designer or brand name. “We ran to all the antique stores, the auction houses and the Marché aux Puces in Paris in order to limit as much as possible the use of custom designs and special orders, which would have taken far too much time,” he says. “This helped to bring the charm and illusion of a family vacation home used over many years.” Artworks, too, play a starring role: a committed collec- tor, Hariri chooses pieces for each of his homes that refer- ence the spirit and culture of their locations. Whereas in his home in London he has hung a careful curation of English paintings from the 1930s and 1940s, and in Paris modernist pieces by continental artists dominate, here in Ibiza, Mediterranean and Oriental artists evoke the mix of infl uences on the island: as he puts it, “like a voyage from Lebanon, my native country, to Ibiza, my getaway place.” Hariri’s life is a fast-paced one: since taking on Pinto, as well as working on residential projects he has opened BEAT, a private club in London devoted to electronic music, and Zitya, a new restaurant in Ibiza, both decorated by the agency. So his summer home, in which he is increas- ingly spending time over winter, too, is a welcome retreat: the place where he comes to relax and unwind, whether that be taking a boat trip around the island, discovering a new restaurant, or enjoying the calming sea views from the terrace outside his bedroom. Entertaining is also the focus of his time spent here. “The house is always full of people: relatives, friends, and friends of friends.” he says. “Days are fi lled with food, drinks and music, from sunrise to sunset.” It’s hard to imagine a more apt setting for such a way of life than the spirited, comfortable home he has created. pinto.design ’’I wanted a colourful, joyful home to respect the bohemian, easygoing spirit of the island’’ AD_047_68-77_Arena_Ibiza_12611259.indd 7704/10/2022 10:28:05 PMNext >
