And that’s exactly what we’ve done in this issue, bringing together exceptional people (we’re calling them ‘innovators’), products and places to illuminate and entertain. So, ‘what’s the gold elephant about?’ I hear you ask. Actually, it’s a gilded mammoth by Damien Hirst and just one of the dazzling sights at the Faena Hotel Miami Beach. There’s a second Hirst in one of the restaurants: a golden unicorn with one flank open, revealing bloody innards. The hotel’s co-founder Alan Faena is a modern day impresario who stages pop-up exhibitions on the beach (there’s a Rem Koolhaas- designed art gallery, too), curates the luxe on-site stores and dresses like an artwork himself. Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, the husband-and-wife team behind movies like The Great Gatsby, had a hand in making the Faena – and the results are spectacular. I visited during a trip to Design Miami last December, which inspired both the ‘innovators’ theme for this issue and a special section called Hotels by Design. Haven’t we all stayed somewhere which inspired us to want to make changes at home? The Faena is just one of the many beautiful hotels selected for their thoughtful design. Talking of which, the collaboration between Swiss duo Kueng Caputo and Fendi that was unveiled during Design Miami is an example of just how meaningful design can be. Survey the results on p54 (sneak peek, left). My favourite article in this issue is about a historic collaboration between the pearl merchants of Bahrain and Jacques Cartier in 1912 (p.64). It’s an evocative reminder of this region’s rich history and what the art of travel used to mean.
