As an essential element of construction, with no other material equalling its resilience, strength and wide availability, concrete is the essential building block of everything from roads to bridges, tunnels to homes, and hydropower installations to fl ood defenses. Production of cement alone, the key ingredient in concrete, accounts for around 7% of global CO2 emissions. The concrete and cement industry, which has cut emissions proportionally by 20% since 1990, is now assembling wider support to achieve its ambitious 2050 carbon neutral target. Forty members of the GCCA including the world’s leading cement and concrete manufacturers have joined forces to accelerate the shift to greener concrete by pledging to cut CO2 emissions by a further 25% by 2030, marking a decisive step in the race to ‘net zero’ concrete by 2050. GCCA members account for 80% of the global cement industry volume outside of China, and also include several large Chinese manufacturers. Therefore, this marks the biggest global commitment by an industry to net zero so far, bringing together companies from the Americas, Africa, Asia, including India and China, and Europe. It follows the September announcement during New York Climate Week that the GCCA has become the fi rst global ‘heavy’ industry accelerator for the UN’s global Race to Zero. The GCCA has published a detailed roadmap which sets out the path that the industry will follow to fully decarbonize by 2050, a target aligned with the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C. The roadmap to get there is built around a seven-point plan that relies on ambitious yet achievable actions to reduce the amount of CO2 intensive clinker in cement, signifi cantly reduce fossil fuel use in manufacturing, and accelerate innovation in products, process effi ciency and breakthrough technologies including carbon capture. The GCCA also calls on governments, designers and contractors to fully play their part by assembling the right public policies and investments to support the global scale transition of the industry. These include greater development of critical technologies such as carbon capture and storage, and reforms to public works procurement policy to encourage the use of low-carbon cement and concrete products. Public policy reforms and the promotion of low carbon products can make a big diff erence as public infrastructure accounts for almost 60% of all global cement and concrete demand. Putzmeister is tackling two big environmental issues associated with concrete pumping – CO2 and noise emissions. The cover story in this issue features the Putzmeister Iontron, a hybrid truck-mounted concrete pump that be powered with diesel or electricity from the construction site. The patent-pending technology integrates the plug-in hybrid in the hydraulic pump train to save fuel, space and weight. By pressing a button, operators can switch between the two modes of energy during the operation of the pump. Depending on the local electricity mix, CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 100%. The Iontron also reduces noise levels up to 50%, which signifi cantly reduces disturbance due to construction activity in residential areas. 1325+250+700+ 350+450+ 20+ Projects CranesAWP’sClientsYears Cranes Spider Cranes is a Mobile Crane and Aerial Work Platforms (AWP) rental provider in the Middle East which offers cost-efficient and versatile lift engineering solutions to the petrochemical, civil engineering, construction, industrial, utilities, aviation, marine and other industries and clients. This means that drivers will not have to wait if somebody else is already charging ahead of them. They simply pull up to another plug. The new charger has a maximum output of 360 kW and is capable of fully charging any electric car in 15 minutes or less, meeting the needs of a variety of EV users, whether they need a fast charge or to top their battery up while grocery shopping. “With governments around the world writing public policy that favors electric vehicles and charging networks to combat climate change, the demand for EV charging infrastructure, especially charging stations that are fast, convenient and easy to operate is higher than ever,” said Frank Muehlon, president of ABB’s e-mobility division. “The Terra 360, with charging options that fi t a variety of needs, is the key to fulfi lling that demand and accelerating e-mobility adoption globally.” “As the global leader in electric vehicle fast charging, ABB is playing a key role in enabling a low carbon society,” said Theodor Swedjemark, chief communications and sustainability offi cer at ABB. “With road transport accounting for nearly a fi fth of global CO2 emissions, e-mobility is critical to achieving the Paris climate goal. We will also lead by example by switching our entire fl eet of more than 10,000 vehicles to non-emitting vehicles.” A lighting system guides the user through the charging process and shows the state of charge (SOC) of the EV battery and the residual time before the end of an optimal charge session. The world’s fastest EV charger is also wheelchair accessible and features an ergonomic cable management system that helps drivers plug in quickly with minimal eff ort. Available in Europe from the end of 2021, and in the USA, Latin America and Asia Pacifi c regions in 2022, Terra 360 is designed with the daily needs and expectations of EV drivers in mind. Leveraging the rich fi eld experience gained by ABB E-mobility’s large installed base, the Terra 360 delivers speed and convenience along with comfort, ease- of-use and a sense of familiarity. In addition to serving the needs of private EV drivers at fuelling stations, convenience stores and retail locations, Terra 360 chargers can also be installed on an organization’s commercial premises to charge electric fl eet cars, vans and trucks. This gives owners the fl exibility to charge up to four vehicles overnight or to give a quick refi ll to their EVs in the day. Because Terra 360 chargers have a small footprint, they can be installed in small depots or parking lots where space is at a premium. Terra 360 chargers are fully customizable. To personalize the appearance, customers can ‘brand’ the chargers by using diff erent foiling or changing the colour of the LED light strips. There is also the option to include an integrated 27” advertisement screen to play video and pictures. 06 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comNOVEMBER 2021 ELECTROMOBILITY ABB LAUNCHES ELECTRIC CAR CHARGER THAT CAN DELIVER 100 KM RANGE IN LESS THAN THREE MINUTES© T adano Ltd. 2021.
