O n-site nitrogen generation is gaining popularity in the Middle East and Africa, mainly driven by demand in the oil and gas and petrochemical industries. This has also helped increase awareness and preference among end-users for on-site nitrogen generation as a logical progression from bottled nitrogen, considering the costs and uncertainties associated with high-pressure bottling, transportation and storage of liquefi ed nitrogen. Essentially, on-site nitrogen generators separate nitrogen molecules from oxygen molecules within compressed air. The most popular separation technology in this region is membrane nitrogen generation (NGM), which involves pumping pressurised air through membrane fi bres and fi ltering nitrogen as it permeates more slowly through the membranes than oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapour in the air. Atlas Copco Rental, the specialized rental solutions provider of compressed air, power, fl ow, steam, and nitrogen rental equipment and services in the Middle East, North Africa and India (MENAI), is equipped to cater to a wide range of nitrogen generation nitrogen capacities ranging from 200 to 6000 CFM at diff erent purities up to 99.9%. Membrane nitrogen generators in Atlas Copco’s rental fl eet include the NGM 7, NGM 1000, NGM 1100, NGM 2000 and NGM 3000 models. These are plug and play units with onsite nitrogen production up to 1000 CFM and purity of up to 99.9%. Akram Tamari, regional general manager, Atlas Copco Rental Middle East & India, says: “Currently, we have multiple models that has capacity to serve diff erent industries in the MENAI region. Nitrogen fl ow and pressure requirements dictate the selection of each of these models. The NGM7, for example, is a compact machine which can be trailer mounted along with the feed air compressor and delivers up to 280 m3/hr. The NGM 1000 can meet demand for larger capacities and higher pressure, up to 1000 CFM and 350 PSI, respectively.” Certain applications required the combination of oil-free compressors and membrane nitrogen generators. “In some cases where the customer is looking for ‘ultra-high purity’ N2 and high PDP such as in LNG plants where Nitrogen supply is required for production and process, we propose our oil free air compressor to be combined with a membrane nitrogen generator,” says Akram. The nitrogen generators are equipped with safety features that ensure the required fl ow levels and purity of nitrogen. They include off -spec valve and shutdown alarms/sensors for purity and fl ow. If the purity or fl ow fall below the set points, the generator will blow- off nitrogen to the atmosphere. The hydrogen engine can use green hydrogen fuel, produced by Cummins- manufactured electrolysers, emitting near zero CO2 emissions through the tailpipe and near zero levels of NOx. The projected investment in renewable hydrogen production globally will provide a growing opportunity for the deployment of hydrogen-powered fl eets utilizing either Cummins fuel cell or engine power. Cummins is investing across a range of technologies to support hydrogen-based transportation including hydrogen engines, fuel cells, electrolysers and storage tanks. The high energy density of hydrogen enables easily integrated on- board gas storage without compromising either the vehicle payload or operating range. Cummins’ joint venture partnership with hydrogen storage specialist NPROXX adds the ability to integrate the fuel cell or hydrogen engine with the high-pressure gas cylinder tanks and supply lines on the vehicle. NPROXX is also a leading supplier of containerized storage vessels, enabling fast hydrogen refuelling for end users. Srikanth Padmanabhan, president of the engine segment, Cummins, said: “We are thrilled about the potential of the hydrogen engine to reduce emissions and provide power and performance. We are using all new engine platforms equipped with the latest technologies to improve power density, reduce friction and improve thermal effi ciency, to avoid the typical performance limitations and effi ciency compromises associated with converting diesel or natural gas engines to hydrogen fuel. We have made signifi cant technological advancements and we are optimistic about bringing this solution to market.” Cummins role in expanding the hydrogen ecosphere goes beyond fuel cells and storage solutions to the manufacture of decarbonized renewable hydrogen, with the experience of more than 600 electrolyser installations across the globe. The modular scalability of its electrolysers are suited to a range of applications such as localized supply of truck and bus fl eets and utility-scale electrolysis. CUMMINS BEGINS TESTING OF HYDROGEN FUELLED INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE C ompair has introduced new models to its L-Series range of oil-lubricated screw compressors, covering 2.2kW to 7.5kW. These compressors are suited to smaller applications across the general engineering, automotive, and woodworking industrial sectors, which specifi cally require high- performing compressors to meet fl uctuating air needs and ensure energy effi ciency, ease of maintenance, and low noise operations. The compressor itself requires a minimum fl oor space of only 60 x 65 cm. With noise levels as low as 63 dB(A), these latest models can be installed almost anywhere without major disturbances to the working environment. There is no need for a separate compressor room or expensive pipework, meaning installation costs are reduced. The simple design of the units also minimises the number of moving parts, improving reliability, and scaling back maintenance costs. Compressor maintenance is made easy by the removable top and side doors, providing users with quick and easy access to all service points. The latest L-Series compressors feature a new C-Pro1.0+ controller as standard, too. Information about pressure, oil temperature and compressor status to the operator together in COMPAIR ADDS 2.2-7.5KW MODELS TO L-SERIES RANGE OF SCREW COMPRESSORS one display. The controller off ers a host of other features too, including a communication port RS485 supporting Mobus. The controller can be used also as a sequencer between two machines with C-Pro 1.0+, continuously monitoring all the critical parameters of the compressor. Compair keeps the design and manufacturing of the screw compression element in-house, using the latest CNC rotor grinding machinery, coupled with online laser technology. The resulting reliability and performance ensure that operating costs remain low throughout the compressor’s life. A ITEFC E3 electric motor is also fi tted as a standard feature. 13 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAUGUST 2021 NEWSD igital process optimization solutions signifi cantly increase quality and effi ciency in road construction, but are frequently also complex; this is why for some years, road paver manufacturer Vögele has been off ering a three-tier modular system with diff erent functional scopes. The three practical tools are designed precisely for the requirements of diff erent construction projects and users and some of them can be combined or expanded: the RoadScan non-contacting measuring system enables users to monitor paving temperature across the whole paved area; the Witos Paving Docu documentation tool records and analyses both machine and process data; and the Witos Paving Plus tools enables all paving processes to be planned and then optimized in real time. Vögele is expanding these three solutions by adding new features to improve their ease of use and accuracy, to suit the requirements of planners, construction managers and pav- ing crews. New features include monitoring paving temperatures in real time on a smart- phone and automatically generating paving and logistics concepts. The Jobsite Temp app gives paving crews a comprehensive real-time overview of all temperature data. Users of Witos Paving Docu and Witos Paving Plus who also use the RoadScan temperature measuring sys- tem can connect to the paver via a QR code and activate the application. The Jobsite Temp app gives others working on the job site, such as paving supervisors and roller operators, in addition to paver operators, access to all the relevant information. Apart from viewing paving temperatures in real time, the foreman, for example, can see other data such as current pave speed, screed width and paver position. In order to work out where a particular truck is unloading, he can also show positions of trucks including the associated delivery note information. Roller operators likewise have the facility to view their own position and distance from the paver and to defi ne exclusion zones. The app and the paver are networked via WiFi, with the result that information can be exchanged between the RoadScan tem- perature measuring system and the smart- phone even where there is no mobile phone connection. To achieve this, the paver sets up a WiFi network with a radius of around 50 to 80 m and acts as a server. Vögele has also continued improving the temperature measuring system itself. RoadScan’s infrared camera measures paving temperatures across the whole area behind the screed in a width up to 10 m. In order to avoid faults in the thermal image due to moving objects, Vögele has developed automatic correction: the RoadScan system compares up to four images for a position, enabling it to detect moving obstacles such as those caused by scanning moving rollers, for example. These faulty measurements are removed from the thermal image at once, giving construction managers and paving supervisors a true-to-life overview of paving temperatures. Vögele has furthermore optimized odom- eter calibration: RoadScan’s GPS receiver VÖGELE EXPANDS DIGITAL ROAD CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS Users of Witos Paving Docu and Witos Paving Plus who also use the RoadScan temperature measuring system can use the Jobsite Temp app to track all the relevant temperature data in real time. CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT 14 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAUGUST 2021 Roller operators can use the Jobsite Temp app, for example, to have the distance from the paver displayed and to defi ne exclusion zones. and the odometer are calibrated automati- cally every 2m. This prevents errors and enables operators and paving supervisors to concentrate better on the paving process itself. The Witos Paving Docu documentation tool has new practical features which users can exploit to monitor paving data and prog- ress better: paving crews have the option of entering target project values such as target tonnages, paving sections or areas directly in the Jobsite app and of tracking progress. They can also have displayed in the relevant truck history delivery notes from trucks which have already unloaded. Vögele has expanded the Witos Paving Plus process optimization solution and thus made it easier for planners and construc- tion managers to issue calls to tender: once the relevant planning data has been entered in the control module, they can create a template for a paving and logistics concept and have it output in the form of a docu- ment which can be edited. This saves time and eff ort and yet still gives the individual responsible the option of adding his or her own information or comments. New Witos Paving Plus function: once the relevant planning data has been entered, planners and construction managers can create a template for a paving and logistics concept and have it output in the form of a document which can be edited. CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT 15 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAUGUST 2021R oad construction equipment manufacturer Road Widener has launched its patented FH-R shouldering and side paver attachment. The FH-R precisely dispenses topsoil, gravel, asphalt, limestone and more on roadways and shoulders, with an attachment compatible with common machines that contractors already own. The remote- controlled attachment connects to most skid steers, compact track loaders, road graders and wheel loaders, operating off the host machine’s engine and hydraulics. The FH-R is available in left, right or dual dispensing confi gurations. The attachment streamlines tasks including backfi lling, road widening, road shoulder repairs, remedia- tion and aggregate placement. The FH-R works with a variety of materi- als including asphalt, aggregate, gravel and topsoil. The material is poured into the hopper at the top of the FH-R and then precisely dispensed via remote control in ad- justable lay down widths from 1 to 6 feet (.3 to 1.8 meters). The attachment dispenses up to 20 tons of material in under 10 minutes without the need for any additional scraping or sweeping. Lynn Marsh, president, Road Widener, said: “Typically, road construction tasks like aggregate placement involve a tedious four- step process where a machine piles aggregate on the roadway and large crews scrape, push and sweep it into place. The FH-R cuts out half of those steps by placing the material right where it needs to go the fi rst time.” The FH-R works with standard and high fl ow hydraulics and has only fi ve grease fi ttings to maintain. Without an engine, powertrain or any associated parts of its own to service, the FH-R requires 90% less maintenance than self-propelled machines, according to the manufacturer. Addition- ally, the FH-R is available with an optional universal mounting plate to ensure smooth compatibility and connection. The low maintenance, functional design of the FH-R reduces its price tag. The FH-R costs up to 80% less than a self-propelled shouldering machine, some of which cost $250,000. That savings extends to trans- portation requirements too. The compact design of the FH-R fi ts on the same com- mercial trailer as the host machine and can be towed by a common pickup truck. Additionally, the FH-R’s small footprint decreases traffi c disturbance and danger on busy highways and narrow backroads. And, with a 360-degree swivel caster, the FH-R can easily manoeuvre around posts, guard rails or any common objects. The FH-R can also be purchased in an all manual confi gu- ration, the FH, without a remote. ROAD WIDENER DEVELOPS REMOTE- CONTROLLED SHOULDERING AND SIDE PAVER ATTACHMENT CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT 16 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAUGUST 2021M ecalac has launched the MR50 and MR60 tiltrotators and dedicated grading buckets for Mecalac crawler excavators and wheeled excavators fi tted with the Connect hydraulic quick coupler. This integrated Mecalac solution consists of a tiltrotator between two Connect quick couplers, fi tted directly at the factory, and a specially designed grading bucket. The Mecalac MR50 and MR60 Tiltrotators allow for a 360° rotation in both directions as well as a 40° tilt left and right for various attachments, including hydromechanical tools such as grapples. Véronique Kennerson, product specialist for excavators, Mecalac, explained: “Due to their sandwich mounting between two Connect quick couplers, the operator can easily remove either the tool or the entire tool-tiltrotator system to immediately resume work with a 4x1 or loader bucket, for example. Another great advantage is that the Mecalac tiltrotator, while extremely robust and among the most powerful in terms of torque, is also one of the lightest on the market, thus preserving the power of the machine.” The boom, which is positioned far back, is useful when weight is added to the end of the stick, as it acts as a counterweight. The two piece boom with off set kinematics allow positioning of tools ideally when used with the Tiltrotator. The off set at the top of the boom (standard), combined with the Tiltro- tator, further increases the 360° capabilities of Mecalac excavators. Operators are able to dig deeper trenches than ever before, in parallel with the machine. The Mecalac MR50 and MR60 tiltrotator option includes dedicated multi-function joysticks, various Tiltrotator confi gura- tions and settings as well as ‘Home’ (return to operator preset position) and ‘Bucket Shake’ functions. The Mecalac tiltrotators are available with or without a grap module. Acting as a grapple, this allows objects to be grabbed and moved while keeping the tool mounted on the tiltrotator. MECALAC LAUNCHES INTEGRATED TILTROTATOR SYSTEMS CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT 17 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAUGUST 2021H uddig has delivered its fi rst hybrid electric backhoe loader, the Huddig Tigon, to a customer in Sweden. The ‘Tigon’ technology developed by Huddig enables its backhoe loaders to run solely on electricity, entirely on diesel, or a combination of electricity and diesel. Huddig claims the electric hybrid model runs quieter, has 30% more power, and can be run entirely on electricity or fossil-free on HVO100. The Huddig Tigon is equipped with machine control systems from Leica Geosystems. The Eco mode of the Huddig Tigon pow- ers the machine with a mix of diesel and electricity. The EV mode allows the machine to work on 100% battery power without any loss in functionality or power. The machine can work silently in up to 2 hours or travel up to 20 km on battery power alone, which is useful for night shifts in residential areas. The plug-in-option enables stationary work and charging of the machine from the main electrical network. A quick charge option provides full power in 1 hour. The battery re- charges during work using the diesel engine The electric motor generators (EMGs) contributes with both extra power when needed and recharging of the battery while working. According to Huddig, the effi ciency of the EMGs are considerably higher than in a conventional mechanical power train and because they are directly connected to the wheels, the loss in effi ciency is minimal. Each wheel is powered by a separate EMG which can adjust and calibrate the speed of the wheel over 100 times per second, which enables the machine to work with optimal traction on all diff erent kinds of ground conditions. HUDDIG LAUNCHES HYBRID ELECTRIC BACKHOE LOADER CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT 18 PLANT / MACHINERY / VEHICLESwww.plantmachineryvehicles.comAUGUST 2021B obcat has launched a new range of fi ve sweepers that form part of the company’s portfolio of road maintenance attachments. The sweepers are approved to use with many diff erent Bobcat tool carriers including skid-steer and compact track loaders, compact wheel loaders, small articulated loaders and rigid frame telehandlers. The fi ve sweeper models in the new Bob- cat range provide sweeping widths from 110 to 215 cm, with bucket capacities from 0.22 to 0.44 m3 for collection of debris. All model sizes are available with unifi ed platform fea- tures. The sweepers feature tougher, longer life heavy-duty bristles, and in response to customer feedback, Bobcat has developed a new optional integrated water tank unit, installed on top of the sweeper itself, with a front-positioned sprinkler system. Bobcat sweepers can sweep and collect dirt or other debris in both forward and reverse directions, which makes them suitable for cleaning parking lots, pavements, docks and warehouses, as well as industrial and recy- cling facilities, construction and demolition sites and animal sheds in agriculture. The attachments employ the Bobcat plug & play system, which enables the operator to install and change attachments in less than a minute. This is enabled by Bobcat’s attachment control device (ACD) with 7pin connector, which recognizes the attachment connected and allows the operator to utilize all of the features of the attachment from within the cab. Part of Bobcat’s road and pavement equip- ment selection, the sweepers complement a wide choice of products for this sector, including planer, wheel saw, soil and asphalt spreader, grader, trencher and angle broom products. Combined with the growing line- up of Bobcat tool carriers, these provide high performance solutions for asphalt, concrete, road, pavement surface repair as well as a wide range of jobs from cleaning, recycling, construction and demolition to many tasks in agriculture. The wide range of planer attachments from Bobcat covers cutting widths from 35 up to 120 cm, making them suitable for Ideal for repairing potholes, surface cracks and ice damage, and for milling surfaces and working around manholes. Other uses include creating cuts for recessed lane mark- ers, matching uneven pavement surfaces, producing vertical edges for pavement repairs, cutting drainage in parking lots and for tapering edges of roadways. The Bobcat soil and asphalt spreader at- tachment, with a standard operating width of 190 cm or optional width of 196 cm, can be used to lay asphalt and other materials to create pavements; to widen and repair exist- ing roads, to backfi ll, pave over and cover trenches and to lay sub-base materials. Due to its off set feature, this attachment can also lay asphalt without the loader needing to pass over the spread material. The wheel saw attachments from Bobcat cut through asphalt, concrete, frozen ground, wire mesh and other hard materials with more precision than either air or hy- draulic breakers. They can be used for road repair and cutting trenches for laying water, gas, electric and fi bre-optic cable lines. The trench cleaner raises and lowers hydrauli- cally and, depending on the model, cutting depth ranges from 15 to 80 cm. Bobcat also off ers wheel saws with segmented wheels al- lowing the user to quickly change the width of the wheel (50, 80, 100 or 120 mm) in the fi eld, instead of replacing the complete wheel in a workshop.
