The founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, wrote that that when wishes can't or won't be fulfi lled in our waking lives, they are carried out in dreams. Similarly as dreams bring release, so Green Massage is designed to be somewhere guests can briefl y escape from reality and experience deep relaxation. Down the rabbit hole Green Massage Madang Road is in prominent commercial building in the centre of Shanghai, designed by Jean Nouvel, the architect behind the Louvre Abu Dhabi. As soon as visitors enter from the street, they are immersed in a quiet and relaxing atmosphere devoid of the bright lights or large windows of restaurants surrounding the building. Fantasy fl owers greet visitorsWorld view commercialinteriordesign.com March 2022 48 Located on the second basement fl oor, the store is not in a particularly conspicuous place, so Vermilion Zhou Design decided to turn this into an advantage, creating a 'rabbit hole'entrance to a fantasy forest where one can disconnect with reality in a new sensory experience. They covered the entrance with large green plants, lit with tiny string lights. Upon entering the cave, low lights and oversized colourful fl owers lead us into an indoor garden where guests wait for their treatments. Playful pastoral As Alice swapped riddles with the Mad Hatter and guests drinking afternoon tea in the garden, so the massage centre's waiting area takes on the aesthetic of playful pastoral through glow worm lights, fantastic blooms and placement of irregular shaped mirrors. The designers say: "At Green Massage Madang Road, we have created a rabbit hole to lead you out of the stress and tension of an incongruous reality."
