Inde Rose, which is French for Indian Rose, comprises five intricate graphic silk carpets with co-ordinated layers of shadowed carpets that combine exquisite botanicals, architectural elements and rural craftsmanship. Each carpet is made in silk, with 121 knots per square inch, and employs a technique locally known as gultaraash – literally, the pruning done by a gardener. This adds a low-relief aspect to the designs, giving their story yet another layer, and the user an additional sensory experience. The palette for the collection draws from the jewel tones of Indian miniature paintings but filters them through a contemporary lens, transforming them into dusty pinks, pale jades, and muted blues and purples.Latest products commercialinteriordesign.com February 2022 42 Family fi rm Founded in 1978, Jaipur Rugs is a family firm using home handmade carpets as a tool to bring prosperity to 40,000 mostly female rural artisans Design debut As Vinita Chaitanya's first ever collection of carpets, Inde Rose seeks to create design masterpieces that blur the lines between art and object, form and function.Latest products 43 February 2022 commercialinteriordesign.com Pairings palette The five carpet pairings evoke the tropical nature of India through rich colours, vibrant foliage and wildlife. This is the starting point of this experimental project in China, near a gently fl owing river in the tourist area of Jiangxin Island in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu province. Architects from LIN architecture design and research institute gave up the consideration of functional elements and started to look for keywords that can defi ne spatial elements in the environment. Being human After analysing the site, the design focuses on three keywords: ergonomics, proxemics, and behaviourology. The project was concerned with the scale of human behaviour, noting that research on the behaviour of different people is a very good design resource for architects. "By observing and understanding the behaviour of people, designers can discover all kinds of possibilities of space," they say about the midnight dark wood pavilion on a far-fl ung site. Light window and a small seatWorld view commercialinteriordesign.com February 2022 48 Defi ning public space Proxemics is a concept developed by Co- lumbia University anthropologist, Edward T Hall, in his book, 'Hidden Scales.' In this project, architects deepen and extend the concept, applying it to the category of physical space, discussing how intimate space, private space, social space, and public space are defi ned and designed at different scales. From the perspective of architects Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima, human, nature, and architecture are discussed as a whole, outside of the urban daily life pattern. The behaviourology of various elements in the natural environment was studied and explored. Breeze, sunshine, the sound of waves, drizzle, the fragrance of sweet osmanthus (an evergreen shrub native to the locale) and how they affect feelings, perceptions, touch, hearing, visual elements, are the materials of the design. Dialogues in design Through keyword research, architects began to create new forms of space in response to the various design elements surrounding it. Human behaviour, such as sitting, squat- ting, lying down, meditating, listening, peeping, wandering, overlooking, and even staring, are all forms of space. The act of light, the rising of the sun, the setting of the sun, the passing of the last light, the coming of the lamp, the illumination, is a dialogue between space and time. The surrounding environment, sea breeze brushing, leaves rustling, frogs chirping, cicadas singing, is the medium of dialogue between people and space.
