Known for fi lling sketchbooks with ideas on a weekly basis and at the time of writing, Karim has more than 4,000 designs in production, over 300 awards to his name, and client work in over 40 countries. His family left his birth country of Egypt when he was still a baby, but Karim has been a frequent visitor to the Middle East and describes himself as a "global citizen", with a base in the United States, where he established his private design studio in New York City in 1992. Starting out as an industrial and product designer, he has successfully entered the spheres of architecture and interior design, creating interiors for Morimoto restaurant, Philadelphia and Semiramis hotel, Athens, amongst others, creating his own branded sensual-minimalism. His visionary and prolifi c take on design, as well his love for the MENA region, make Karim the perfect keynote speaker for the upcoming 15th annual Commercial Interior Design Awards. He'll be our guest at the ceremony on September 15, 2021, where the cream of the local design industry will gather to see the winners and highly commended entries announced for 17 categories of awards commending projects, businesses and people from the Middle East. Thrilled We're guessing that Karim's diary is as packed as his porfolio, but we manage to catch up with him ahead of his return to the UAE. He says: "It's been about two years since I have been to Dubai, and I am really thrilled to be back. It is always a pleasure to visit one of the most creatively evolving and progressive cities in the world. I'm looking forward to delivering an inspiring talk at Commercial Interior Design Awards 2021 and experiencing Dubai once again." I'm thrilled to be back in Dubai... Karim has spoken about how he was "obsessed" with drawing eyeglasses, shoes, radios and luggage throughout his childhood. His father, a painter, is described by Karim as a "creative Renaissance man" and books about artists were scattered through the house. Karim loved reading about Andy Warhol, Rodchenko, Picasso, Calder, Corbusier, YSL, Halston, and other artists known as accomplished pluralists who created some of the most iconic images in contemporary culture. As per his social media, the loosely- formed autobiography 'The Philosophy of Andy Warhol' is still one of Karim's top 10 best reads. His number one? Alain de Botton's 'The Art of Travel,' as Karim estimates that, pre-fl ight restrictions, he spent 180 days a year travelling. Like those that inspired him, Karim embraces the democracy of creativity and has collaborated with clients to create affordanle and accessinle 'democratic design' for household brands Method and Dirt Devil, as well as luxury goods for Veuve Clicquot and Swarovski, to name a few and, locally, the Switch restuarant brand, which brought a soft, organic space" into two branches in Dubai that are still fondly remembered for their modern and futuristic interiors. Perhaps because of his all-embracing approach to the creative process, Karim is a frequent guest lecturer at universities and conferences, globally disseminating the importance of design in everyday life. As well as talking the talk on accessibility in design, Karim lives this out through his public persona. Known for signature bright pink outfits and bold eyewear, he engages with his audience on social media through a charming mix of professional promotion for new projects and throwbacks to favourites – lamps shaped like cyborgs, a condominium in NYC and Turkish tablewear – and a light- hearted insight into his daily life. During lockdown, followers on Instagram were treated to movie recommedations (Karim loves kitsch classic 'The Rocky Horror Show'), daily workouts to house music classics and top 10s of Karim's favourite books, bands and organic food (oatmeal and grilled octupus both feature). Will the CID Awards 2021 make it into a Karim Rashid top 10? Here's hoping...
