A historic company Flos was established in northern Italy in 1962. Right from the beginning, great masters of Italian design, such as the Castiglioni brothers and Tobia Scarpa, were commissioned to collaborate with the company. They created industrial archetypes, like the Arco fl oor lamp or the revolutionary 'Cocoon' series of lamps. In almost 60 years, Flos has grown signifi cantly, showing a constant commitment to research and technological innovation, but always preserving the original poetic quality of its lighting designs. Meet the Sponsors 31 August 2021 commercialinteriordesign.com The CID Awards are the means to show appreciation and recognition to the people driving the industry. Supporting it is our way of showing our appreciation, and to emphasis our recognition of their work and our involvement as a main player in our market segment. We look forward to catching up with everyone in the industry, and congratulating all the winners and shortlisted entries. For us, they are all winners. Like the rest of the world, we think the main challenges facing the interior design industry this year have a lot to do with the pandemic, like replacing site visits with virtual meetings and executing projects while complying with safety measures and other similar situations. However, we think that this year still had some exceptional opportunities in the construction and design industry. We hope 2021 will be when business picks up again, going back to pre-2020 levels and more. It is the intellectual property of designers, and exceptional creative work must be celebrated to increase the recognition of designers within the broader industry. An exciting 12 months We launched Athena, a unique, thoughtfully engineered control platform for offi ces, retail stores and F&B spaces. I believe this will be a great tool for the local design community. The other new launch is Alisse, an elegant, balanced and versatile wall control. Projects we are also working on include the Museum of the Future in Dubai, Katara Towers in Doha, Aqua Raffl es Hotel in Jeddah and Four Seasons Residences at the Dubai Water Canal. Lutron always looks forward. We will keep leading the change in lighting controls, guest room management systems and motorised window systems. An industry can only thrive if there is a diversifi ed ecosystem of different stakeholders in place. Supporting one another is essential, especially in times of crisis. CID is one of the most credible media players and the Awards is a great opportunity to engage with the A&D community. We're looking forward to networking, entertaining our clients and consultants and celebrating the nominees and winners together. Now in their 15th year, the awards return to our new home of the JW Marriott Marquis in Business Bay, Dubai on September 15. Our updated nominations portal went live on April 4, 2021 and closed on July 14 of the same year. Every year we're amazed by how much hard work and dedication goes into people's award submissions and 2021 was no exception. Hundreds of entries came in for 17 categories covering projects, people and companies vying to be named the best of the best in interior design and fi t–out. Particularly strong were F&B and the concept category, the former perhaps refl ecting what we missed out on over the bumpy ride of 2020 and the latter giving designers a chance to dream big, outside of Masks and music at the 2020 awards budget constraints and restrictions made necessary because of Covid-19. It was a tough job whittling down the shortlists for each category, but after many hours spent deliberating, we're confi dent that our judges are looking over the hottest tickets and most inspiring people from the last 12 months. The 1,800 sq ft offi ce, based at Al Mamoura Tower in Abu Dhabi, will be home to the 100 strong team of team of ECD experts charged with shaping the future of young children from birth to eight years old to fl ourish, with a strategy that focuses on early care and education, health and nutrition, family support, and child protection in Abu Dhabi. The space blends playful and colourful elements with a cutting-edge approach to workspace design. Pallavi Dean, creative director of design fi rm Roar, explains: "The big design challenge was this: Create a space that grabs attention with the playful nature of childhood, while at the same time Playful and colourful elements with cutting edge design The new HQ for Abu Dhabi's Early Childhood Authority by Roar Playful animal heads adorn meeting rooms PLAYFirst look commercialinteriordesign.com August 2021 36 being a mature offi ce. We had to keep reminding ourselves that it's not a space for kids – it's a space for adults who are making decisions about kids. The outcome is a sophisticated workplace for ECD professionals to do their job – from deep, solo work to collaboration – but with a warm, funky, playful vibe." The ECA space is littered with examples that straddle these two worlds. The lobby THE LOBBY grabs attention with a lifesize fl uffy monster called 'Big Blue.' He greets Sam Saliba Founder and creative director of Art PaintingLAB, who worked with Roar on the project, during which time Anna Defl orian was hired by Dean as in-house art director The Early Years art direction imagined the art to have a naïve, childlike "feeling" however with mature visualising and staging elements. We kept the artwork simple. The materials selected are soft to the touch and the colors are aligned with the workspace brand guidelines. The art was imagined to be uncomplicated like a child's mind and to merge easily in the minimalist spaces. From elementary wood cut shapes and murals to prints, textiles, cute animal busts, clay portraits the art has no end of space surprises. An oversized happy monster and bear emulate the size differentials children experience in relation to the world. The more mature art pieces are 3D printed portrait sculptures as well as projection of images and quotes of his late Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan. Overall, the success is that the art is welcoming, warm, relevant and space enhancing. This might be the cutest offi ce ever! ABOUT THE ART guests with a playful smile – immediately creating an atmosphere that is welcoming and child-centric. The colour palette of the lobby is vibrant and rich, while the textures of the furniture and walls are soft and tactile. It also sends a powerful message about the history and culture of the UAE. "This was something the client was tremendously passionate about," explains Dean. So the story of Sheikh Zayed bin Zayed al Nahyan, founder of the nation, is projected onto the wall. The traditional 2D portraits of rulers are replaced with 3D printed busts. Moving inside, the design narrative is based on the synapses of a child's brain: A series of hubs connected by organic, fl owing walkways. First look 37 August 2021 commercialinteriordesign.com Signature spaces MEETING ROOMS No two are the same. One has a custom-made felt map of the UAE; another has walls adorned with playful heads of indigenous UAE animals. CIRCULATION SPACES Not just corridors, these are celebrated. One has distorting mirrors that make visitors look bigger or smaller – a playful talking point. THE COLOUR SCHEME Developed with a colour psychologist, with orange spaces to inspire energy and blue spaces to soothe and relax. FURNITURE This was curated, not just ordered. Each one is selected to add the right function, the right ambience, for each corner of the ECA workspace. THE KID ZONE A place for children to hang out and have fun. Many of the ECA staff have young children, so a crèche facility was a must-have. MATERNITY ROOM Sets a new benchmark for spaces for nursing mothers, with soft textures and reclining furniture. BATHROOMS Large and small doors for WCs – a reminder that this is a space shared by grown-ups and children. ECA VALUES Are embedded throughout the space. From typography on the walls, to lockers for staff members covered in the Arabic script of the ECA logo. Raising the bar Designer Dean concludes: "The goal was to create a space that was child-focused but not childish. With the help of a client who was involved every step of the way, we think we've raised the bar for an education-focused workspace." Overseeing art was Sam Saliba, creative director of Art PaintingLAB. She adds: "The success is that the art is welcoming, warm, relevant and space-enhancing. This might be the cutest offi ce ever."
